congrats dave.....i wish you the best of luck!! WOW - you were able to retire at 56??? way to go man.... i retired a year ago at age 58. actually the company was in the middle of reorganization and they asked a bunch of us old timers with 35 years service and a minimum age of 58 if we were interested in a package including full pension with no penalty for early out so i didn't have to think too long about it !! besides, i was ready for a change. now i drive about 32-35 hours a week delivering autoparts, just pocket money but it keeps me out of trouble and in the loop with garages and i get all my auto parts at cost!! are you going to do anything for work now, something part time to keep busy or ???? again, CONGRATS!! mike

I retired a year ago in April, and loved it for 8 months. But there was a company that kept calling me and offering more and more money, and then, the '41 Pontiac popped up. Anyhow, I tried to price myself out, but they met my bottom line. Now the '41 is mine, the '55 has a rebuilt hydro, and the '63 Chevy SWB is in the shop getting a SBC installed, in place of the old 230. So life is still good, and my contract is only for another year. Can hardly wait to be retired again!! :D

  9. Retired Feb. 1, 2003.....and I'm REALLY good at it !

Worked as a free-lance contractor (draftsman) from 1970 - 2000 doing structural fabrication and machining drawings in many different disciplines. Then I took a job as an OTR truck driver for a year....hated it !

Now I drive U.S.P.S. mail (big truck) part time to supplement my meager Social Security benefits. I wish I had found this job 45 years ago. :)

  10. I retired in 2001 from the International Union of Elevator Constructors. It was a great job. I miss the companionship of the fellow workers. I don't miss the work. It wasn't always easy.

  11. I involuntarily retired in 1993 mainly due to multiple back surgeries. No retirement income from the company(went belly-up 2 years later)but a settlement with Workmen's Comp kept me afloat for awhile.

The extra money from striping and lettering helped a bit and this past January I officially retired with Social Security.Still fighting with the VA on a disability claim.

Since retiring I have had more business than I know what to do with but I keep picking away at it.My friend tells me if I get any busier to raise my prices. With the way fuel costs are going,I may have to.

Got forced into retirement by Boeing in 2003 with 18 years in so they wouldn't have to pay out the price jump at 20yrs. I didn't mind as the company has gone to hell in the last 10 years. Loving it. You do have to have stuff to do or you will drive everyone around you Nuts!! Like your Avatar.

    Congrats!
I have about 15-20 more years to go, but about as retarded I mean retired as I can get by going from a 10 hour day shift to a 5 hour graveyard shift. Enjoy and have fun with all of your free time.

The only thing about being retired is that you don't get any days off!

I retired in 1992. Woke up the next day, looked at the clock, and thought I had overslept. Then I remembered that I was now retired, and went back to bed.

Now I don't wear a watch, and have no alarm clock.

Drew my first Social Security check in June of this year.

    Working is highly overrated...

June of 2003 for me after 32 years at Chrysler. I'm enjoying it! That is what you work for in the first place to get to do what you want and when you want to.

I just got laid off, does that count as retired?

  20. I retired 6 years ago. Gave my Uncle Sam 40 years. I never missed the work. But at first I told foks I missed the people I worked with. Now that I am established in the local car culture the only time I think of them is when someone asks me about retired life.

And after 6 years on the dole I can say that there are only two things bad about it. The first is that you generally have less money coming in and more opportunity (time) to spend it.

I retired last August after almost 38 years of a 7 day rotating shift schedule. The last 8 months I was working every day and a lot were 12 and 16 hour days. I was trying to make it till the first of December when I turned 62, but all that working was starting to affect my health. I've spent the last year just cooling it and getting a lot of projects around the house done. It's just great to go to bed at the same time EVERY day. I'm going to see if I can pick up some type of part time job in the fall. I'm enjoying the hell out of this retirement thing.

I'm going to be 62 shortly and figure I'll draw my SS between 67 & 70. I just enjoy building rods everyday although it's gets old from time to time. If I retired I wouldn't be doing anything different.

    :)

According to some folks ... I never had a REAL JOB ...
    I was a government employee ...:)

Retired at 57 ... and love it ...
I stay busy ... as I want ... and deal in real estate some. I have a real estate license and dabble with it.
Wife retired from teaching algebra for 32 years ... so we now have time together ... which is great.
    :D
We pretty much go and come as we please ... and love life. I had a heart attack 5 years ago and was dead for 5 - 6 minutes so we really value the time we have together ...

I spent 35 years building and testing diesel engines. Now I want to build a smooth Olds Rocket.Don't know where to start.I've played with some small blocks but having a hard time finding a 350 rocket to work on this winter.Dvae

  27. Retired after working with one company for 27 years. Took an early out package at age 56. A smart man told me, "Son, always go with the sure thing".

But it'll get better as I get older. At 59 1/2 can tap my 401K. At 60 I will collect an Army Reserve retirement check. At 62 I will start drawing Social Security.

All I get right now is a pension check every month. Supplement that with part-time instructor work at the local Technical College. I also hustle old car parts. Buy-Sell-Trade and have fun doing it.

Only one problem. Everyday feels like a Saturday ;) .

I have to keep workin' so I can afford all these durn car parts!:D Just 60. Retired from U.S.Navy with 22 years, now working on a retirement from my current job at the local school district. Just finishing my 34 Ford Flathead and starting in on a 39 Plymouth slantback.

Comes a time when the kids ar grown and the house is paid for and you've actually got a few bucks to play with. If the body holds out I really look forward to putting in a full day at home.
