  3. A few thursdays You Tube video posts back was of a hot rod do***entary (3 part movie), and I do remember seeing this car in the 3rd installment racing. I think the film was circa 1960 if I remember right.

    The original tunnel ram.

This was a time when Chrysler wowed the auto industry with the 413 cross ram dual 4 intake system.

The ugly factor played a big role in it's popularity back then and makes it an icon today. How could something so ugly be so fast? The only thing they cared about was making HP. They did a good job of that for it's time period.

    Gang -

Don't be mistaken. This car was considered "**** ugly" even in its heyday. It was conceived and built by "nerd" engineers (more likely called "eggheads" back then), on a limited budget and following the "form-follows-function" theory. But a thoughtful look at it reveals a LOT of smart thinking.

In addition to its almost immediate ********** of its particular cl***, it had the more profound affect of helping usher in scientific thinking where "seat-of-the-pants" engineering - and/or lessons learned by years of trial and error had been the norm for decades.

Some of you may be familiar with the history and record-setting feats of Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins (still actively building successful Pro Stock motors to this day). About this same time, he was building his own "legend" using this same "scientific" approach (albiet with a bit more "style" - LOL).

Of course, this was all pre-computer stuff, but the key element was critical thinking, and the application of factual priciples in search of performance. The "Rams" were groundbreaking drag racers in that sense - and deserve much of the credit for propelling the sport forward. They continued to apply the same principles very successfully into the AFX movement, and eventually went on to field a string of very strong fuel dragsters.

All in all, major players in the formative days of "modern" drag racing.

Oh yeah, the PR they got - beginning with the "High and Mighty" car - helped put the hemi on the map, and aided Chrysler in selling a ****load of cars for the street too.

If you're into drag racing and don't know these guys - a Ramchargers "google" is definately in order.

Actually, the car was campaigned in '59-60 and the Chrysler Hemi was very much on the map by that time.

But the Ramchargers, still being Chrysler engineers in '62-64, did have a hand in convincing management to allow a re-engineered set of hemispherical heads to be placed on a revised 426 Max Wedge shortblock. ;)

  9. Ya know I think that image is one of my all time favorites.
That guy in the suit with that car just doesn't fit into our idea of hot rodding or raceing. He's about as out of place as a pork chop at a p***over feast.

High and Mighty does look like a pile of **** thrown together, even though it is an historic pile of ****. Sure ran good! but even the eggheads back then hadn't figured out a lot of stuff that modern racers know...how weight transfer really works, collectors on headers, etc.

The hubcap headlights are *****in, I wonder why that hasn't caught on lately?

This car and its' poor handling at high speed is responsible for the rulemakers imposing the 31 inch crank limit.
