Imagine being around in 1905, you've probably never seen a car before, or heard an engine running, aside from maybe a steam locomotove. And then to see something like this and hear it run? Must have been shocking. Very cool.

Wonder why it smokes so much? Anyone know what speeds it got up to when it took the record in '05? With such a stripped down car and that size engine, you'd think she'd fly.

Looks like 121.6MPH was its best ever in 1908. Click on the link at the end of the text for the cars list of records and photos of the inside of the motor. :)

Not only is that super cool now, but can you imagine in 1905 firing that thing up???

  19. Man! I am digging on that machine bigtime. Awesome sound. Sounds like an early airplane or something. Back before 1920 we had the Tacoma Speedway boardtrack here in the Northwest with cars like that running on 2x4's set on edge with high banks and it was something like 2 miles around. Love to catch a glimpse of the past and see it just once. Wow!

I have a collection of old race cars and unusual cars from the turn of the century and such. The race car drivers looked like fighter pilots back then, and the cars were great machines to admire. They called the autoists. These are just a very few, but many of the old race cars were wild indeed with the chassis and engines they made and ran. I did not know it until I was watching the history Channel, but the Klan was big time into the Indy 500 at one time. Found a picture of such to support what they were saying on the Hitory channel. Weird!

I believe that is Ralph DePalma and his Miller in the twenties. Car now resides in the Indy museum. Ralph was a class act and I am not sure he hung out with the hooded gent. You cannot control who looks over your shoulder at the track.-Jim

I have run across the Klan myself in some of these old photos at swap meets and passed on them. Will have to look for that episode on the history channel. As to the racecar angle, I recognize Barney Oldfield in the Peerless Green Dragon in two of the photos and then there is the Christie front drive. Also I believe the Olds Pirate is another of the photos. Other two racing shots I may have to dig around myself. Great photos-Jim

Somewhere I thought I had photos of the Darracq, still might but while searching I ran across this car which is one of my favorites of the era. They raced 60 hp Mercedes and 90 hp Mercedes on the beach of Daytona. Willie K Vanderbilt had one of each I believe. But this behemoth was a feast for the eyes and ears I can imagine. Two 60 hp Mercedes engines inline. The photo with the hood up is an original Lazarnick photo on the beach. It is was driven by Herbert Bowden to a world record in the mile at 32 4/5 seconds in 1905 which is I am sure was a wild ride. If the photo was clearer I am sure we could see a wide smile on Bowden's face because this photo was right after setting the record. Haven't looked thru this file in ages and I am glad I did because some of the images on some of the photos are disappearing and maybe I can try to rephotograph them and get them back.
