Man, those Austin pu cabs are tiny, especially with 10% set back and a raised engine/trans, glad mine is a sedan!
No one recognizes my Austin's blue lace and cob web fenders? It had red oxide primer covering it up when I got it, (and Centerlines) Someone out there has to have seen it somewhere.......

Yes. This car remained un-chopped until Jr parted it out and built his Opel Kadette. He match raced up and down the east coast under Big John booking until he could get his own bookings. Big Johns "Football " Austin was primarily a west coast car.

Time to drag this one to the top with these photos and a request for anyone that recalls the car? Ran in Wyoming and Montana in the late 60's

  16. I was in Warrens shop 1976 & he was big time into 32 Ford hot rods & flatheads. I have a pic somewhere of his 32 roadster with 4 carbs twin plug heads fired by twin Spaulding flamethrowers. He also had 3 sets of Ardun heads 2 NOS still wrapped in some kind of wax paper.

My buddy Jeff owns the "Agitator" which is currently being restored back to the "C&O Hydro". Was also later called "Captain Crunch". My buddy Joe owns the "Austin Strangler". It's now a blown street/strip car. Both are in suburban Buffalo, NY. The "Big John Mazmanian" cars are two different cars. The un-chopped car belonged to Jr Thompson.

Some of the Austin A40's got chopped roofs later in the era, and were not allowed to race in NHRA Gas Class because the roofs were chopped too far. Big John's A40 in particular was fine at first, but after chopping it too far it ran as a match or exhibition car instead of it's original AA/GS class.
My Austin I built a dozen years ago is the predecessor to the A40 cars, and an A8 Austin. Often confused with the Anglias, as the two have similar bodies, but different grilles and trunk areas. The A8 Austin is also a shorter wheelbase, and slightly smaller car than the Anglias were.

Growing up near the Niagara dragstrip Jimmy Oddy's gassers were my favorites, especially his Austin. The first picture is in it's early unchopped form. I believe that red head teenager behind it is me. Second one is again at Niagara but chopped. Years later I was up for the Niagara Reunion at Lancaster Speedway. The restored Oddy Austin was there on display. A light rain started and the owner looked around for someone to help him set the front clip back on it. He saw me, motioned me over and we set it in place. Didn't was my hands for a week.
