62-65 Superstock Mopars picture thread..

Saw a posting on another thread of an ad for a Thunderbolt-vs.-Thunderbolt match race at Clarksville (TN) Dragway, a track I went to in the 1970s. Started nosing around and found this guy (apologies if this is old ground). His family had a Plymouth dealership in Clarksville, and the newspaper archives seem to indicate that he did pretty much all of his racing while a teenager. Circa 1966 the family sold the franchise, and became a used car dealership. Looks like the racing ended after that. The AWB 65 Plymouth will be on the AWB thread.

This Plymouth looks distorted to me....maybe it's just me or the photo at speed??
Check the door glass fit to the roof, the front fender fit to the door, rear quarter panel (maybe buckled?) and roof alignment. All don't look correctly aligned or sagging to me ??

 

The doors and fenders were most likely fiberglass. The wrinkle in the quarter was common on altered wheelbase Mopars back then, but that looks like a super stock. Maybe a weakened body from acid dipping and no added frame connectors? Just a guess really.

 

Post 1544:
Jan 29-31 1965, Beeline Dragway in Phx AZ. First open competition for the 65 Mopars, Those bodies look like they are flexing because they are. "Chemically milled" to excess with no rollcage, weakened floor pans and oversize tires. When the leaf springs shortened the body and quarters went with it. If the doors did not open on their own they may have jammed where you could not get out. Automatic cars fared better than the stick cars obviously. The track opened for testing and that evening teams were looking for body or frame shops to pull the chassis back to somewhat level. The S&M car was bent to the point after the race they returned home rather than go on to Pomona the following weekend. The cars had no fiberglass from the factory.

 

I graduated from high school a year ahead of Ashley.After his father sold the Plymouth dealership it stayed in the same building for several years.I bought my first new car which was a 1968 Road Runner from the new owners and they were still in the same building.At that time it was owned by Gordon Hawkins and James Corlew.A good friend of mine ran into Ashley in Daytona Beach in 1967 and he was selling cars at a dealership there.Years later I believe he had a car lot across from Ft. Campbell.

 

Does anybody remember this 63 plymouth light weight T85 car it was sold new in boise idaho & was originally red with a white interior from what I've figured out it bounced around the mid west until 1968 then went to canada where Terry McHardy painted it white & raced it as the highlander from about 68-71 these are the earliest pictures I have of it.

That Plymouth looks really familiar, I think it was at some.of the Early Mopar Nationals in Michigan and Ohio. I'll look through some old photos and see if it's the same one.

that would be surprising since it spent most it's life on the west coast & then Canada from about 1968 to 1996 which it then came back to states to be used as a parts car & put away in storage until a couple years ago.

 

It was a while back, so I may be thinking of a different Plymouth. The paint scheme just looks familiar. Any chance it was at Indy for US Nationals in the 70s and / or early 80s?

 

I think it would of been silver by then..

That actually looks like their 2% car that was built to run A/FX at Pomona since the AWB cars were not NHRA legal. But all the stuff you said above applies except they did have fiberglass parts from the factory if my memory is correct.

 

IMO the 62 Plymouth has the nicest roof line of any car ever.
