I'm working on a 49' Chevy and I can't find the VIN numbers anywhere. Looked in all the usual spots A piler, door jams.... I heard maybe on the original engine? Anyone know where it is? Thanks.
If you still have the original engine, it would be stamped on the block near the distributor. The other place would have it is the on the A pillar but it sounds like yours is missing. Some say there might be something stamped on the driver's side frame rail but most people doubt that.
Not a VIN 'per se' but a serial number Engine numbers: 6 cylinder on crankcase to rear of distributor. Engine numbers were GA-1001 to GA-1031807 http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/models/index.htm http://www.thecl***icchevrolet.com/1949_chevrolet_IDs.htm
According to the tag above I have a Styleline Deluxe 2 Door Sport Coupe. (1027) I think the original engine is still at fathers shop out back. Looks like ill be digging it out soon to see if I can find the numbers off it. I had heard about the VIN being on the engine before but wasn't sure. Thanks again for the help.
I used to have a ‘54 Belair Powerglide that I bought from the original owner, and as @Bleach said above - “the vin number is on the engine block.” I always thought this was crazy, as engine swaps are common place.
