So... I’ve been looking at a few new project cars and bodies but anything that looks promising is already chopped and I don’t do chopped cars. No offense. Just curious, anyone ever unchop a car? Got any pics? Thanks in advance. -Ron
Picking up my 27 Coupe. Bottom pics. Before and after I un-choppd it. (Not me in the picture) The guy that I bought it from had chopped the top off to make a high boy. Good thing he saved the top. I took it home and welded it back on using a 90 amp mig on a very low setting. The body was on a 1982 Mazda PU frame with a Dauntless 225/350TH. I kept the body and sold the frame and motor.
My buddy who just chopped his sedan still has the 4 inch pieces he removed if you’re looking to unchop.
Sounds like a waste of good money to pay the extra for a chopped car that was done right and then unchop it. Still if it is a real solid car and they haven't got it to a finished state so be it. I have known a couple of guys to add a couple of inches back in on a "hard chopped" ride that was just flat squashed though.
got a Model A coupe in the shop that somebody had chopped 6 and a 1/2 in .luckily, the guy that chopped it kept the pieces that he chopped out and the new owner had me unchop it so it was just chopped 4".looked cool before but the guy couldn't fit.
There’s a guy that’s got a gl*** 32 body and ch***is for sale locally. Thought if I could buy it right I might try putting it back to stock height. But, then again it’s a gl*** car and the bodies are cheap enough that you could just buy one stock height. So, it’s probably not worth it. That idea got the wheels turning on unchopping a car. That’s all.
Search the following site on the HAMB: "The G***er P***er Is Back in Ohio" dated Jan. 2012. Haven't seen anything posted for a long time but they found Ohio George Montgomery's "G***er P***er" Prefect quite a few years ago. Someone chopped it after George sold it. Carey & Rob did a great job of unchopping it. Lots of photos. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/the-g***er-p***er-is-back-in-ohio.664100/
1967. Wisconsin modified. The amateur ground the metal paper thin at the weld. I had to cut 1" to 2" above and below the weld. I cut up// cut down more than a few bodies for race cars back then. Rules required OEM frame rails and OEM bodies back then. About 1968 I went to late model bodies.
