How do you overpay for something you want and are willing to pay the price for?

Most HAMB types probably do their own building which makes $50k look expensive. The neighbors son works at a Ford dealership in Santa Barbara Ca and came by to replace the fuel pump in his mother's expensive newer pick up. When asked how much that job would cost at the dealership he started adding it up and said labor was $140/hour. Paying those kind of labor prices to have a 32 built, $50k comes up quickly.

Viewing these cars as investments feels real contrary to what hot rodding has meant to me. I feel like this is supposed to be the punk rock of the automotive world. Build and drive cars that make you scare yourself a little.
Ever see a band that was real edgy and raw in their youth play a show 25 years later in a park somewhere and people have their kids and pets there. I have. It ****s.

...it's crazy what some people will pay for metal that's bent in a certain form...

As far as an investment, new vs old, I bought a new ‘84? I think it was, Mazda B2000 PU, I think it was around 8 or 9 K, been so long I forget. It was a basic thing, 5 speed and a heater and AM radio. I sold it in the late 90’s for 650 or 750$

Now, looking back, I probably could have bought a nice Model A PU for the same price. For another few K have a very nice daily driver for the city traffic I was dealing with at the time.
I’d be willing to bet a paycheck had I done that(buy a Model A PU) I would have gotten quite a bit more for it than the Mazda sold for.

Not sure if it makes sense today though, but just something to think about

Agree totally. When the whole hot rod thing becomes about just coughing up a wad of money to become part of it, the whole spirit of it is lost for me. It seems to me it used to be a way of life where you actually got dirty in the process of creation. Just doesn't seem the same to me if you pay someone else to get dirty for you. In my opinion, hot rodding should be a full contact sport. The 'look what I bought ' thing doesn't appeal to me. Gotta shed some blood, sweat and tears.;)

Well, maybe. But many don’t have time, tools, talent or space to build set of saw horses, so they buy them. Then there’s the age factor. I’m nearing 60, if I had money to spend I’d have no issues buying something I could just get in and drive, nor would I have issues paying someone to do the work for me.
But I don’t have the $ to spend for fun like I once did, so I’ll take another few years to try and do what I want;)

I usually hear the quote referring to Fords. "Never paid to much for a Ford, just bought it too soon." Think it used to pertain to Ford's from the 30's-40's and I used that philosophy when I bought my Fords. I got no deals.

As has been stated in this thread, the next sale price for the ones I have is dependent who dies first; me or my potential buyer. The buyer's pool gets smaller the longer I wait.

What a load of ****. There have been shops building hot rods and customs for people who couldn't or didn't want to do it themselves since the get go. The recent thing seems to be all the nonsense of people looking down their nose at those that do.

Hey man, my post is just my take on it. The hands on building is what it's all about for me...............
Others get to do it their way. It's all good.

Have made some edits to my previous post (#156) in red. Should work better for you now.:D

I agree totally. And there's many reasons people may buy instead of build. My dad has Parkinson's disease and is fading fast. I didn't have time to build my current car, I needed something to get him out and enjoy life now. My last one I built, my next one I'll build. But this one I needed something turn key pretty much immediately. So we definitely shouldn't judge, who knows the motivations people may have.

Can someone please send me links to all these $20 – $30K nicely finished Henry steel 32 Ford hot rods? I can't seem to find the listings. Personally, I think $52K is fair starting point for that car from what I can see.

He maybe a newbie but he sure got a discussion going. Topics that include 32's are probably a good area if you want to get contrasting opinions/heated debate. :)

Too much is what somebody with more money paid for the car you wanted.

What's going here? It's kind of like where's Waldo but in this case...What's odd?
    1. Why does This 1932 Ford have solid wheels?
    2. In the top photo it has dog dish...bottom, full wheel covers?
    3. Top Black walls...bottom, narrow whites?
    4. The car has no steering wheel.
    5. The car has no seat.
    6. What the heck is that little fan?
    7. I think it's a toy or model.

Being a political vehicle the little fan is an attempt to remove some of the ******** fumes that resides inside. There is no seat or steering wheel because it is all looks with no content like a politician! Isn't photoshop wonderful.

Im not suprised. That looked like a pretty good car
Rod, you managed to hook everyone into a pretty spirited debate almost entirely not about the car in question. Welcome.
