Str8 lake pipes on a flathead is my personal favorite. Something about the old str8 sixes too, especially cc Hercules engines. Love that sound. I grew up on it, and there's nothing like it. I can id one if it's within earshot!
This is my compromise for my neighbors. I also got tired of pushing it out of the garage and down two blocks before I started it with the straight pipes.
That 409 Chevrolet sure sounds wonderful! You have to admit though, the '62 Galaxie sure sounded good in the Beach Boys song.
A friend of mine recently had this 62s twin brother at his shop. Pretty good resto job on a #s matching car. It surly had a nasty idle .It had a factory style exhaust system and still had a pretty nice rumble... I wish I had a 409 for my 62 Impala... would be nice to have

Those Pontiacs sound real nice with the factory Long Branch exhaust manifolds, 2-1/2" pipe and #17749 Super Turbo mufflers... From a strictly exhaust sound stand point the best sounding engine is the 1964 389, closed chamber heads with 10.00:1 compression with a 1-1/4" freeze plug blocking off the center exhaust crossover. Years ago I had that engine in a 64 Bonneville. I wanted the intake paint to stay put so I hammered a freeze plug in each head. When I put it all back together and fired it up I couldn't believe my ears!!! The sound was fantastic!!
Until you've driven one for a while. The drone I think is responsible for most if not all of my hearing loss. I did them once...once. Somebody say something? Huh?
I can't help it, but I love the sound of my 1952 Mercury with a lazy 351W from 1975. I use standard exhaust manifolds, 2.5" pipes, one Big muffler on each side (you can see right through them) and the last 18" Are 3". I run a Edelbrock intake and carb. Mild 354 Chrysler, block hugger headers, and 2 inch duals out the back with 18 inch gl*** packs. Turn it up!
Taboo is running medium length gl***packs and they muffle just enough to let the gear drive be heard. Occasionally will pull the caps off the lake plugs
Baumi....Your '56 sounds great! Do you know what the specs are on the cam, duration (total or @ .050"), and valve lift"? I'm in the early stage of building a 283 and since it's smaller it would probably need just a tiny bit less cam than you have, to achieve a similar "rumble" at idle. Thanks. Lynn
Lynn...In fact it´s an old Edelbrock Performer RPM cam https://www.summitracing.com/parts/edl-7102 Its specs are 234°/244° in/ ex @.050 lift, valve lift is .488 int/ .510 exh and 112° LSA. I ´d think you´re going to need dome piston to bump up the compression for it. I also had it in a 355 with flat tops and zero decking, it was acting a tad milder in the 355.I´m using a 24oo rpm stall converter with both , the 327 and the 355.
This is the same cam in the 355 with flat tops and 64 cc heads,it kicks in at about 2400 rpm and the 3.08 gears don´t help either. But we have lots of Autobahn and no drag strips, so long legs and a good top end are fine for here. I shifted at slightly under 5k, because the engine wasn´t warm enough yet. It goes to 6500 easily.The 327 is even zippier.

If that's supposed to be a correct nuts and bolts restoration then they used the wrong exhaust system. With the exception of the color and the deck mounted antenna, I drove it's twin brother off the showroom floor in '62 and it wasn't anywhere near that loud with the exhaust capped.
As you can see I ain't a Pony-ack guy but.......wonder if ALL older V-8's had that much heat/exhaust going through? Most of them had the crossover. Todays fuel doesn't run well in those older engines when you don't make a few minor changes.. Make sure you use stainless valves, zero deck the block, forged pistons are also a good idea on a street engine.. Keep compression 9ish that way you can run 87 with a real healthy initial timing setting.. I usually end up with an initial at 20 all in by cruising rpm, mechanical adding 16 starting just off idle and all in by 28-3000 rpm... I don't like vacuum advance. I like to have the mechanical starting at 1200 all in by 2500 unless your running some 4.56 up gears..
The cam's idle sounds meaner in the 355 than it did in the 327! With it coming in at 2400 that might be a bit more cam than I'd want in my 283. Thanks for the reply. Have fun....and it looks as though you are. Lynn
The 56 has a mild steel exhaust system, the 34 stainless steel tubing, and I think that is what made the 355 hit harder.
Cam FYI stuff............Now my stuff is SBF not Shivel-lay but at 306 cu. in. the size is about the same ( Ithink that's whats important..'that's what she said'!) Anywho I like'm pretty snotty but NOT soggy down low. 230 intake...236 exhaust @ 050 duration on a 108* LSA. Its the LSA that gives it the rumpity-rump more so than the duration. With longer exhaust duration/later closing... that gives it the deep thump-thump sound plus helps empty the combustion chamber with a full exhaust. It;s installed 6* advanced to boost up the low end torque. It really starts coming on by 1000RPM. Hang on until 5500-6000RPM! I have a T-5 so I wouldn't know about convertors and all that other sissy stuff J/K. I220 -230 @050....E226-236@050 duration on a 108* LSA should make your ride sound great and haul the mail too. CR 9.5:1 iron heads...........10.5:1 Alum heads. LOTSA initial ignition and keep it cool and it should be bullet proof. 6sally6
