Wasn't this the rage in the 80's when they used to paint everything.

I have an NOS ClearSpark GM window cap around here somewhere. What I've always wondered about is the chrome GM caps that I used to see some guy selling at the Long Beach swap meet years ago. I figured it was something the lowriders installed during setup at car shows. Anyone ever see one on a running engine?

Can you see the spark from the points and jumping from the rotor to the contacts at night?

Oh man, I had one installed way back in the late 70's, early 80's or so. If I remember correctly mine was tinted red, but definitely transparent.
Yes, you can. It's cool for about 30 seconds or so.

I'd like to metalflake one. Should I epoxy prime first then sand and seal before I shoot it? I thought I would use fine line tape around the terminal ends. But what about the tape line? Will it buff down? I sure don't want a tape line showing under the plug wire boot. What kind of sealer should I use? Lippy

Could you just paint the engine to match the distributor cap? :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Oh well, its a slow dreary day...........

Personally I think you should do what you think looks best. If everything on your car is detailed to the max, then it goes with the rest of the detailing. If your car is a simple street rod, I doubt most people would notice.

Unless it is something like a magneto you really don't want to draw attention to it, same thing for plug wires. Black wire black cap, done.

Being a painter for 40 years I have painted a few distributor caps for customers. I've never heard that there was a problem with them afterwards.

Here's an idea for those into this topic. Got a generic black coil? Can't live with a cheezy chrome one? Want something that looks old, fits the vibe? Here's a tip from yer ol Uncle Highlander, paint the top black part some rattle can brown. While it's wet dab it a little and give it that tortoise shell look where it's mottled black n brown, and if the black steel shell is too shiny hit with some semi-flat Krylon. Instant vintage coil. How ya like me now...

Yes you can..its no big deal. Just make sure to mask the plug wire ends and paint away whatever color you want! Do a light sanding to scuff the surface for good adhesion and then paint it as you would a body part. A clean and prepared surface will give you better results.
