I picked up a 1975 Lincoln rear end for use in my 1950 Buick ( correct width and bolt pattern for my Buick wheels). My question is the rear end has "skid control" Is anyone familiar with "skid control". Can I use the rear end without hooking up the skid control or how can I disable the "skid control"? Any tips will be appreciated. Thanks.

  2. Two comments; one, the 'skid control' is probably a early version of ABS and should be a non-factor in your use. Just don't connect it. Two, the '70s Ford rear discs (if that's what you have) are a poor design and known to be troublesome, hard to work on, and expensive to repair. Conversion to later, better discs is a bit complicated, same for drums.

If that's not what you have, pics would be very useful...

Thanks for the response. The rear end is in shipping. Should have it in a couple of weeks. I'll post pictures then.

The only thing that will be on the rear end for the skid control will be the driveshaft speed sensor behind the pinion yoke. All of the controls for the skid controls are elsewhere in the car.

Yup. Just build it out of the system.

I had a 75 lincoln a few years ago, no problems with the rear brakes on that one...but it was a well preserved, low mileage car.

Those rears are wide, heavy, lousy gear ratio, funky suspension brackets, weird brakes, etc. Not my first choice for just about any hot rod. I hope it work out ok for you.

May be a 9”, but the Lincoln 9 3/8” rear end looks the same until you pull the ‘pumpkin’. There is a notch in the case for ring gear clearance. If the ratio is not suitable, I believe a 9” third member is a direct bolt in.

75 Lincoln had a 9", not a 9-3/8" rear. The bigger one was used from 66-72.

  11. Yes you can eliminate the option by just not hooking up the sensor. You would need the electric control module mounted in the trunk to hook it up anyways so you will not have that. As Squirrel said it should also be the regular 9" and not the 9 3/8". If you are just replacing the rear end for a non operational original it will be OK but in a hot rod scenario it will not have a desirable gear ratio for performance.

although if you have a big engine and/or light car, and a non overdrive transmission, the 2.75 gears might be fine.

I have an 8" Granada/Maverick in my 47 Ford, and I found that you can pull the rear disc set up from mid 90s-early 00s Crown Vic/Town Car/Grand Marquis (mounting brackets, calipers, and rotors) and depending on what you get it off of and what you are putting it on there is little to no mods that need to be made, but you will need a spacer between the axle mounting bracket and the bearing to make up the difference. It's a lot easier than trying to source all the drum brake parts, and a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a kit online.

Thanks for the input but it already has disc brakes.

Somebody mentioned it already, but the 70's rear disc brakes are a total pain, and I'm sure finding parts will be a pain too.

Speedway sells a disc brake kit for the Fords that could probably just replace the existing disc set up if it proves to be problematic.
