Technical 8.8 Ford rear end in a 1940 Ford coupe

    I have a 8.8 and want to change that yoke flange to a u joint style rather than the flange style? It's a 31 spline axle type off a explorer. Any tips on part numbers to swap the flange out to a u joint style? Thanks.

    Denny's sells yokes for various std. U joints. But considering the cost I prefer to use an adapter U joint myself. Only about $25, vs. $150 for the yoke.

    When I built my '39 Chev coupe I set the engine, and bolted up the trans. Then made my trans mounts, and set the 8.8" rear axle to center in the rear fenders. Got underneath and measured up the driveshaft length, and the length seemed like maybe a common size? So I began searching the internet and found a 3rd Gen Camaro V8 had a driveline very close to what I needed. I looked on local CL and found a guy parting one out, and bought the driveline for $40. Took it, and the Ford flange to my local driveline shop, along with a new 7" input yoke I determined I'd need for enough total length. Had new u joints installed, and one the adapter joint to go from the Chev driveline to the Ford flange, plus balancing. Whole deal, including the driveline purchase came in under $200. And if I ever needed another driveline i just use a 3rd Gen Camaro stock V8 unit.

    Im looking for a few 8.8's now, even though I have a few factory narrow 9"s on the shelf. Some builds just dont a 9" and the cost ***ociated. A ready to go 3.55 to 3.73 "posi" that needs brackets is perfect for a driver, cruiser that'll never see slicks.

    Your welcome. Its a Yukon piece, so it should be available just about anywhere. East Coast Gear Supply just happens to be the closet to my house.

    By any chance, did u have clearance issues in the driveshaft tunnel with the old 5 inch coupler vs the u joint style?

    My club brother and I pulled 2 Ford Explorer rear ends out at the u-pull-n-pay yesterday. They were having a black Friday special of $30 off the regular price of $180. Not actually ready to dive into swapping into my '39 Coupe, just yet, but we were both there and seemed like a no brainer. Scott grabbed a 3:73 posi unit from a 2000 4WD, mine is an open diff. I'm OK with that. Need to do the front disc brake swap first. Speedway actually has a $50 coupon for black Friday until today. Can't really afford the $380 right now but might just have to put on credit card. Another deal too good to p*** up. BTW...I'm over the poor stopping power of the drum brakes, on my Coupe. Yes, I've tried all kinds of stuff to improve it, including a dual master. And the 2:35 rear ratio ****s too. (Granada rear axle)

    Be mindful that the speedway kit pushes out the front tires quite a bit on each side, around 1". If you have a narrowed front axle you are OK but stock and lowered it will cause fender and tire issues without deeply inset rims.

    Our local Pick N Pull had a 40% off sale this last weekend and the regular price on an 8.8" with disc brakes is $230, so that makes them around $138 on the sale.
    I almost went shopping for a spare as I usually like to keep a good 3.73 or 4.10 posi around. But not sure I've got any projects in the near future, and it's cold as Hell outside right now, so stayed home and ate leftovers instead!
