Some years back, we had a really bad ice storm in Kitsap County, Washington State. Bremerton Raceway, on Bremerton National Airport property, was particularly hard hit with all the trees on the Airport, especially on both sides of the inactive runway Bremerton Raceway is on. Then, the big winds came in. Snapped trees like they were tooth picks. Trunks 3-4 feet in diameter, no lie! Literally hundreds and hundreds of trees. Airport had no recourse but to get the logging companies in. It was really bare afterwards, and we were concerned without the tree buffer, we'd be subject to noise complaints; that did't happen thankfully. But, the entire landscape was changed, and we no longer had those oxygen producing trees to help with making cars run better. Lots of brush and smaller trees are left, but not like it was, all because of Mother Nature having a bad few days. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

Lloyd, you could always try this if it were oak or walnut....course, elm not so much. I would recommend the pairing of a nice classic lager with 5 more as an after wood cutting aperitif.
Good luck with the cleanup and wear yer chaps!

Lmao that's awesome :D ain't no sense in getting in a hurry, more crap weather on the way. I'll uncover my car tmrw but the bulk of it can wait on me. Coger was gonna bring his Sega car Saturday for paint but we agreed that next week might be a better bet;) again, i hate winter! How's that song go? "It's the most wonderful time of the year"? Bullshit!

Boy howdy, you make me feel lucky that I only have two inches of snow on my 400 ft long driveway. Wind is a lot rougher on trees in my yard than snow or ice.
Stay safe and don't over do it on cutting those trees up all in one shot.

If that was a Bradford Pear you've been dodging a bullet for a while. I'd trim it back to the stump.

Last year when hurricane zeta blew through the upstate of South Carolina 3W JOHN lost 12 big oak trees and a small outbuilding, I was lucky and only lost a huge cedar tree.
HOTRODPRIMR lost 3 trees, one fell on the deck and house ripping the power meter and pole off the house and his daughters car got crushed.

We helped each other as much as possible, helping with hot rods is normal but back breaking work for three old farts, that's real friendship.

A buddy who shows up with his chain saw when you have trees down is every bit as great as a buddy who shows up with that special tool to do what otherwise would be a complicated job on your hot rod.

I feel for you, last May when I got put to the cabin I had 4 large trees that fell on the property. Lucky there was no big damage.
The out house almost got smashed. 80ft spruce hit a birtch on the was down and bent the birtch like a spring. Found them laying on the roof of the out house with no damage. Topped the spruce and the birtch sprung back and removed the spruce. Love it when a plan comes together.

Lloyd, glad there was no damage.
Know what you mean about the cold.
Was supposed to go sailing with a few other small boats here a week or two ago, didn't even go out of the house except to get the mail for two days.
    Hell , it was below 60F !!!!
I even had to break out long pants:(

I'm about 2-1/2 hours due east of Lloyd and have an overgrown bradford in our side yard. I'd forgotten all about it being covered in ice until I saw Lloyd's photo. It makes a lot of shade but has to go this spring before I end up with it on the house.

Not a lot of brush, nice straight trunk, pretty clear area to work in. Why, that tree will be cleaned up in no time at all and give you another chance to develop your carpentry skills!!!;)

  18. That is my second choice. First choice is "peach brandy" from the Mason jar.

I hate wind. Years ago when I was in advanced MP training at Ft. Gordon, GA a big wind storm did some serious damage to the trees at the near by Augusta National Golf Course. Don't know who knew whom but all of us trainees got the "privilege" of cleaning up all the downed branches on the course. Took us all day loading branches into deuce and a half dumps. Never cared for golf after that.

  26. Stay safe, everybody. Some years ago, a fellow I knew in the Dalles area was killed on a Black Ice curve of the road. When ice storms hit the south, folks are inexperienced and untrained to drive in those conditions. Don't let your pride get you killed.
In other places, such as the Scandinavian countries, they have high speed, road rallies on ice and snow. You have to drive it so often it becomes instinctive.

  28. I know what you mean. My town here in Texas is right on the edge of the band of ice and snow. The Fire Department first did some emergency training. And then they made a public announcement to assure everyone that if it caught fire they were pretty sure they could handle it.

Lloyd, I haven't seen any coal around here in years! I'd like to have a load myself. Next year I'm going to the saw mill in Garrison and get a couple loads from there. Screw cutting wood from now on. Two days with a chain saw doesn't agree with me anymore. Have you got it cleaned up yet? If not I'll come and give you a hand. I got a good saw.
