I was wondering if anyone has "split" the center exhaust port on a Ford flathead to give the appearance of four exhaust ports? The reason I ask is that the car I plan replicating has an air cooled V8 and runs the exhaust tubes to a large "collector" tube. Having just three exhaust tubes will likely result in most thinking I'm running a V6 which will result in lots of explaining. I also wonder if doing so would alter the exhaust note. This is still a ways off as part of my project, but I'm trying to nail down parts/cost/source. Pic of exhaust on car I want to copy. Possible tube adapter.
Thought I would update this thread as I came across it in a google search. I’m almost done with my flathead build, and have “split” the centre exhaust port. A few pics and a link to my build thread. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/my-gn-jap-tribute-build.1131795/page-11
Ha. Why not split them all, then ? V12 it like those small block Chevy Oldsmobile valve covers heroes.
I always thought the center exhaust was part of the cool factor. In fact, that was the set up on my ‘56 Olds 324 Rocket Engine, and I welcomed the questions (usually from a younger hot Rodder). Anything to help propagate the love of old hot rods! Rest ***ured, “What’s Old - Is New again.”
Haha. I understand that my build doesn’t really fit into what most here are accustomed to as far as “traditional” hot rods, but I have vision that I’m sticking to. That vision is to pay tribute to Richard Scaldwell’s GN JAP creation. I felt recreating his exhaust was essesntial to capturing the look of his build, and having only three exhaust pipes per bank would ruin any attempt to accomplish that. Of course, none of this is about perfornance, and he in fact has used flex pipe just fine for over 10 years. I’m just waiting to see if others with flatheads will now attempt something similar. Lol!
