That BST manual say the Model "Y" is just for 6 volt.
And the Model BST is for 6 or 12 volt. It also has a separate plug in for 6 or 12 volt.

I do not understand why the separate inputs. Do they have different shuts for the 6 and 12 volt?
Why would the 6 volt shunt not also work and give the correct amp reading for 12 volt?
