Has anybody have any info on running a quater leaf suspension? sorta like or something similar to the way they do on rock crawlers with a half leaf that runs from the frame to the axle. would it work?
Quarter elliptical might work too. Honestly, spell it with every variation you can think of ! I had the same problem, and I think I got as many or more results by spelling it wrong. Tim D.
I have several ch***is on the road using the 1/4 elliptical rear springs with ladder bars and they work great. Built my first car using this suspension 25 years ago using the springs as the bottom bars and triangulating the top bars. Cut a 40 Ford front spring in half. I saw this car a the LA Roadster show and it has lots of miles with no problems. It's a real 32 roadster.
Here's a front drive Miller race car using quarter elliptics as a 4 bar on a DeDion tube. This would work ok on a solid front or rear if the springs are fairly stiff. With soft springs it would likely get be a bit unpredictable. Another option is to use a spring as one bar, and a solid bar for the other. I also added a pic of a 4 wheeler with a quarter elliptic on a separate 4 bar linkage. There is a shackle between the spring and axle so it can move in an independent arc.
Just for fun here is an Oakland with a 3/4 elliptic spring. Using a bit of imagination, you could replace the lower parallel leaf with a rigid trailing arm to make a 1/4 elliptic.
Heres how I did it for my 49 Ford. I had the leafs de-arched but I wasnt happy with the articulation of my bag set-up. here is some pics
