There is a really good book on Holman and Moody that shows that picture in the store room. I used to have the book and I don’t know what happened to it. I know for sure they scrapped a bunch of boss 429 cylinder heads for scrap aluminum. Not sure about the 427s

Although the SOHC was not allowed to run in nascar I'd say most of them were sold to drag race teams. The Boss 429 was used until 1973-74 until big blocks were handicapped and became uncompetitive to make room for small blocks. It would be a shame if HM did scrap them.

I know paul rossi when he was driving this 427 cammer comet and me and a buddy drove his tow rig and car down to a new car show in Louisville, Ky for the Cincinnati dealers. Paul got the comet when arnie beswick desided to not drive it and continue with pontiac. Paul drove the westborn plymouth prior to the comet. s-l1600.jpg

I think I posted this before or was it that shotgun 429 in another 32 roadster on the HAMB big block thread?

  22. Err, that last one (red roadster) isn't a 427 SOHC...it's a Coyote with specially made make-it-look-like-one covers.

Exactly. Ford and H&M started giving them to guys like Ed Pink and Connie Kalitta when NASCAR put the weight penalty to the Cammer cars (NASCAR never banned the Cammer, just made the cars so heavy they were noncompetitive). The drag guys used up a whole bunch of them too. The SOHC was notorious for unintentionally disassembling and leaving the crankshaft on the track. Ed commented in an interview years later that it took him quite a few motors to figure out how to get the SOHC to run right on nitro and keep the rotating assembly in the block.

If you are a SAE member, or can find a used copy. Pick up this set of books. They are the ultimate authority on Ford's racing history, and lots of attention is paid to the FE, SOHC, H&M, NASCAR, and NHRA shenanigans in the 60's.

Has anyone got a copy of that SAE 427SOHC paper, I can't seem to locate my old copy?
