So we got the ole ladys 62 2 door home sunday and looking under the hood i see some rear sump issues that im sure will piss me off when i try to wedge a 327 between the rails. So who has done it? do they sell a mount kit? Im not looking to change tons of shit and i have the motor laying around thats why its going into it. Im making Her do most of the work cause she wants to have a car thats her own so the less fab needed the better. Thanks Bryan
I've seen SBCs in '64-'66 Mustangs which are very similar to the Falcons. If the '62 is the same as a '64-'66 it can be done. I believe there is a kit, but I can't remember who makes/sells it. Chris
Put A Hemi In One Yrs Ago...used A Tube Axle....the Rear Won,t Take Any Power, Go To A Mustang 8 Or 9 In
I saw an early nova with a ford small block in it, guy said it took him 15 minutes to install it....so it should be pretty easy to put a sbc in the falcon with the early nova V8 pan and sump.
under chassis headers may be tight ...maybe not.....fenderwells may help.....can't be too hard.....thats what a mig , torch, and a big hammer are for.....brandon
Both the early mustangs with SBC's had mustang II front ends. It looks like exhaust manifolds would be tight.
used to be "the Thing " in the lt 60's around here B4 purists started screaming about cross swapping, I can remember at least 6 just in my home area all sbc powered a few strt axles the rest w BJ spacers, used to piss mustang guys off no end ;D
Did it twice years ago around 1970 for a friend. Once with a SBC and once with a 396 Big block. Still have some pic's somewhere. Both had straight axles and we had to fabricate the headers from scratch for the 396. Don't remember what we did for headers on the SB. I know we built mounts for both like the old Hurst ones.
yea i was affraid of having to straight axle it. i dont really want to do that its just going to be her little daily driver and i want to keep as stock looking as i can. Im thinking another 6 may be in order. Hell even a chevy 2.5 has crossed my mind. maybe throw a turbo on it? who knows. I just got done doing a major swap on my non hamb car and im not looking to do a huge load of work any time soon. maybe the 144 will be good enough to get her thru the winter. Thanks for your replys guys.
I HAVE A FALCON WITH A BIG BLOCK CHEVY IN IT, I USED A SPEED WAY MOTORS STRAIGHT FRONT AXEL WHICH ALLOWS YOU TO REMOVE THE SHOCK TOWERS AND FENDER WELL EXIT HEADERS IF YOU ARE GOING TO KEEP STOCK FRONT END THE MOTOR CAN STILL BE EASLY INSTALLED THE BEST WAY TO GO ABOUT IT I FOUND IS TO USE A TRANS DAPT UNIVERSAL FRAME MOUNT PART #TDP-4810 AND A FRONT SUMP PAN WILL BE NEEDED OR A MILODON VEGA PAN WILL WORK AND FOR THE HEADERS RAM HORNS OR BLOCK HUGGERS HOPE THIS HELPS
Built one years ago out of a Falcon Ranchero. Used the early Nova pan and pickup and put a tube reinforcement under the pan to tie the frame together. Built a bitchin set of headers (underchassis) and ran them into a set of Corvette sidepipes cut off and running straight back to the rear axle. Borg Warner 4spd and fabbed a driveshaft to mate to the Falcon rearend (after blowing two of them I learned to not get on it until I was at least in 2nd gear). Sold it to a friend of mine and he lost his license in less than 2 months driving it. With the Corvette exhaust and the hood chained down it sure fooled a lot of people who couldn't figurewhat it was because of the sound. Not being able to get the hood open just added to the fun. BTW, it had a 365hp 327 in it that I had laying around. FUN!!! Frank
I know a guy who did SB Chevy in a 63 wagon. He went the Mustang 2 route with the front suspension. I know you want easy, but if it's for her, you may want to look at that route. It makes it alot more enjoyable to drive! He's done 2 of them with SB Fords(each of his kids has a falcon), and said he's got it down to about a weekend start to finish. It also looks cleaner under the hood. They do make kits for these. I'm not sure where he gets them.
I saw an early Maverick with a SBC & if I remember right, the motor sat real high in the frame.Cant remember if the shock towers were still there or not. It was a "Pro Street" thingy.
i don't think two inline sixes will fit very well! am i gonna have to get some pics of mine to convince ya six is the way to go? the three carb setup is pretty simple to do.
Had a friend in high school who put a 200 Ford 6 with a 4 brl in his 60 coon. If blew away every V-8 falcon, or vega he could race.
use the early corvette front mount ('55-'62) and an oil pan, oil pump and pickup tube from a '63-'64 chevy II/ nova and IIRC early camaro headers.
i'd like to see that 4bbl mount! i've seen plenty of holley 2bbl equipped 200s, but i can't imagine cramming all that mixture through the stock log manifold. hehe, i can also make the claim that i've blown away every v8 falcon and vega i've had the chance to race...i've yet had the chance!
So it looks like consensus is that: 1) This is a perverse and unacceptable thing to do; 2) If you are going to do it, a straight axle is the way; 3) If you’re hellbent on keeping an IFS, you should go Mustang II; and 4) If you’re some kind of nutcase and want to keep the Falcon suspension, you should dress the Small Block Chevy like it’s going into a ‘62-‘65 Chevy II, and do everything else like a Small Block Ford swap. -Dave
if you wrap it up in a tarp and stuff it in the trunk, okay, but be careful and don't wrench your back getting it out at the dump.
That's just sick putting a chevy engine in a Falcon. Auto be a law against it. Put a flathead in it. Then it would be way cool.
