Need to lay out for a fan shroud on my Model A coupe project. The fan is not square to the radiator. I want to have the opening in the shroud square to the fan correct? Just making sure My thinking is in the right direction.

  2. The info I found was that you want the fan about half way inside the shroud for best results. Reasonably even gap around the cir***ference between the fan and shroud also.

Yes, the fan opening wants to fit nicely around the fan. The radiator end of the shroud wants to fit nicely against the radiator.

To visualize, this is a C3 Corvette fan shroud. It is the most dramatic example as the radiator is drastically slated under the low nose of the car. The shroud is thin at the top and fat at the bottom so the fan sits squarely in the opening.

Also, don't make it too shallow or you will not get good flow across the entire core.

This one on a 40 Chevrolet. The aluminum kit was bought from Speedway in the Circle Track section/catalog. We measured the radiator body, and followed the instructions. It was made for horizontal use but we turned it vertical. Painted it satin black. D5978EC3-E831-4426-952A-2993EF3712DF.jpeg

Fabricated mine from s**** steel shelves. The fan was far from being square with the radiator. 474E4374-CA75-44F4-AC83-0CEB8E6CC4B5.jpeg 075D390F-E3E9-4362-B977-DA5866700210.jpeg

Ron Covell recently posted a video on how to form a metal shape that's round on one side and square on the other (like a radiator fan shroud) that was educational:

The fan should be 1/3 in the shroud and 2/3 out for the maximum air movement.

Made my '28 sedan's shroud out of 1/2" thick MDF, an old T-shirt & fibergl***.

My fan is square to the radiator, but I think what's most important is (1) the shroud is tight against the radiator and (2) the gap is between the shroud & fan isn't too big (I trimmed my shroud so it has a consistent 1/2" clearance).

In my 41 PU I went the same route as @jimmy six above with a somewhat generic aluminum shroud from Summit that measured the same as my core. I had to cut the fan hole and the fan surround, I added some brackets to the radiator to make the shroud a bolt on, then I did some riveting and powder coating.
