Spindle assy....

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by rockabillybassman, Oct 7, 2008.

  1. Can someone tell me the order of ***embly for 28-48 Ford spindles (kingpins)? Does the bearing go under the axle boss? Which side of the bearing is uppermost? Where does the felt washer and its cup go? Do the shims go on top of the axle boss?
Also, I'm hiring a reamer for the bushes. What lubricant or cutting oil do I need to use? How tight should the spindles be after reaming the bushes?
Strange, out of twenty something early Fords I've had over the decades, this is the first time I've ever had to do new bushes.

Bearing under spindle, dust shield up, shims if needed on top of axle, cup washer under kingpin head with felt washer under it. Hone bushings for .001" to .0015" clearance

If its an adjustable reamer, make sure you seat all the blades snugly when adjusting, sometimes one can 'hang' a little, which can throw your clearance out in one second, then its another set of bushes.. happened to me once. I use trefolex spray, or it comes in a paste. clearance should be a 'palm' fit if you dont have bore gauges..i.e a shove with your palm should push it through, nice and snug.
Phil1934 is spot on with the order of things!

Have you looked into taking them to an engine reconditioner and having them hone the bushes ?

That is what I did - it wasn't expensive and is supposed to give better results than a reamer (especially if you are not used to doing it that way).

  5. Not 28-31. Thrust goes on top of the spindle.
