?
  1. Leave it to rust

  2. Same color (grey) as engine?

I'm close to getting transmission rebuilt, Hydromatic 4 speed that is tied to a 235 six. The 55 Thriftmaster is painted grey on my research, the frame at back of engine is cast iron, so what is bell housing and tranny color? Is there an original color to paint?

    Thanks in advance

There is a cast iron paint that looks like bare cast iron, I've used it with engine clear cote it looks nice much better than rust.

Wasn't there a transmission company many years ago that painted their racing transmissions with yellow and black "tiger" stripes? I'm not saying that would be the way to go though.

oldiron 440's suggestion, cast iron color paint (cast blast) does have a nice look. It's a bit darker than I had always expected, more like a dark grey charcoal color.

This is exactly what I would do also.

I'd leave it bare cast iron, or paint it black.

The concept of "cast iron paint" really bothers me, for some reason.

Is this for original car showing from VCA for points? Call them.

  7. Fairbanks used to paint their transmissions yellow with black tiger stripes.

  8. Transmissions in the local factory were always natural. Least they were when I started in 1964.

Pretty sure they were never painted from factory, just rusted naturally. The cast iron paint doesn’t look right to me.
    Black is better.

How do you think a restoration looks fresh for more than a year?

I live in Arizona, it's not a problem. But also, if you restore the transmission to have the original seeping gaskets, the naturally occurring coat of ATF will help the iron keep it's natural color.

  14. Fairbanks Transmissions in Connecticut painted their transmissions with the yellow and black stripes. I recently sold a Dale Hall built blown 454 BBC with a Fairbanks Turbo-400 Transmission attached to it.

Paint it any color you like, or don't paint it at all, like the factory did. If this is for show judging you should consult the experts as to what is original. As a rule transmissions are not painted.

  16. Personally I have never painted a transmission...if someone wants to look under my car and criticize a rusty transmission it doesn’t bother me a bit.

I also don’t build cars for show. I build cars because it’s fun to drive them.

All very good discussions, appreciated! Especially the Stones with paint it black! Will see what it looks like after the builder gets done with it. I am building this truck to original as possible. Thanks guys.

I've painted transmissions using either engine enamel, or wheel paint. Both hold up well. I'd not leave any cast iron trans bare. I'd at the very least spray it with clear enamel. But gloss black would be my choice, as it's a neutral color that goes with anything.
