Took a break from my turn signal fiasco and I'm dealing with headlight wiring now. I noticed in the DC catalog they list 6v headlight switches for the '54s. Do I need to swap to a 12v H/L switch for my 12v conversion?
Some will say yes, but I ran 12v through an original 6v switch in a '53 I had. Sold the car recently after about 25 years still with the original switch and it's still working. My '55 Merc still has its 6v switch; the lights work fine but the rheostat for the dash lights gave up the ghost.
You might get lucky but I recommend you get this low cost upgrade https://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Headligh...t-Plugs-Relay-Wiring-Harness-Kit/262483542712 First, that will take the load off that 60 year old plus switch and second your new headlights will be brighter also the ceramic plugs are better for the newer bulbs, not bad insurance for $20. This kit makes it "Plug N Play" but this shows how they work.
Thanks Jeff, already did that.... So if I do have to acquire a new H/L switch, DC's 6v switch will fill the bill? https://www.dennis-carpenter.com/tr...ht/faa-11654-a-headlight-switch-***embly-6-vo
I am running the stock headlight switch in my 55, the contacts in the 6V switch are larger so they work just fine. The only issue is the dimming feature for the dash lights does not dim the dash lights much at all but I usually leave the dash lights on high anyway. I think you are fine.
