Need some advice from you guys that have already installed your motor midship, behind the cab. Starting to fit my 5.9 ***mins in the new ch***is and wondering what I should run for clearance under the oil pan. Do you all run a skid plate just in case?
I have more than 12" under the engine, but the way the engine was mounted in the frame originally, my Allison trans only cleared the road by about 6". I reworked the engine mounts (no trans to frame mounts) to raise the trans up so I have about 10" under it now. I don't think a skid plate is needed at that height. I always picture a cement block laying in the road on a dark night!
I've got about 10" to my bat wing oil pan, but only about 6" to the torsion bar adjustment bolt heads right under the oil pan. The adjusters will hit a tallish curb if I try to drive over it. Of course the big difference between a motor up front and mid mounted is the apex of a hill, like a boat ramp or car trailer....
oil and trans pans are the same night as the bottom of the frame. When done the bottom step or running board will set with in an inch of the ground. When aired down.
Thanks for the response guys, guess I'll get started on some motor and ****** mounts. Am I allowed to still say ******?
A friend owns a transmission shop up in the next town. He says ****** 1k times a day, or more. I get tickled about the third time. Yes, I know exactly how immature I am, thank you very much! He hosts a car cl*** for homeschooled boys and fatherless boys one night a week - I shoot a thinly veiled grin at the boys and egg the owner on, fishin for snickers. I win when someone busts out laughing. Homeschool dads are often a stuffy bunch... The guys teaching appreciate me even less. JML
