I found an NOS SW tach drive with plans on using it in my 32 pickup with a C69A flathead. Where can I get a metal cased cable and what rpm tach should I be looking at ? Any install issues I should be concerned about ? Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
A good instrument shop should be able to make the cable for you. Hopefully they can still get the metal sheathed cable. The black outer is common nowadays. I was lucky and bought a used metal cable and a shop was able to cut it down to my length. The tach in my flatty powered sedan is low RPM, 4 thou. I cruise about 2,600 down the interstate. Not a whole lot of high RPM driving for me.
There’s a HAMBr that makes cables, danged if I can recall the name, maybe edit the title to reflect you need a drive cable for it and he’ll chime in.
Are you thinking of Rusty @e1956v at speedoservice.com? He is an alliance vendor. Real easy guy to deal with. He helped me out on a speedo issue and I have bought some parts from him. Chappy
Thanks Chappy, no problem to make the new tach cable and housing. I just need a length, type of tach and the measurement of the size of the flag tip(keyed female end) of the tach drive, either .150 .187 or .203. I can strip the vinyl covering off of the casing to get you the original steel sheath look you want.
Thanks for the replies. I don’t have a tach at this point so until I find something, I have no idea what I will need but the help is appreciated. Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Definitely wait til you have a tach before ordering the cable. Early SW tachs had female fittings for the cable, and they switched in the later 50's or so to a male fitting.
Somebody out there correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you'll be looking for a 1:1 ratio tach with that tach drive of yours, which would kind of generally rule out the more modern tachs that were 2:1, driven off of the distributor. Since you have a flatty, you're probably not going to need anything over 5,000 rpms. That being said, it's always a cool look to have an 8,000 unit. Why not? Yes, Rusty from Speedometer Service is the man to go to for your cable, once you know the length you want.
Most of the angle drives I've seen have the ratio stamped on a little oval pad. Usually .500 or something like that. Is it anywhere on that drive?
Nothing stamped but simple math shows 2 turns of the threaded portion that would attach to crank produces one turn where the cable threads onto. As per the pic, 95263 is the p/n which I have found very little info on except someone looking for one. Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Found a 4000 tach local so after I get access to the truck I will determine a way to mount it as well as proper cable length. Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
