Paula Murphy on her fantastic run at the Bonneville Salt Flats in the worst possible conditions, a rain-drenched race track. She recorded a two way average of 226.37 mph on November 12, 1964, in Walt Arfon’s Jet Car that was sponsorship by Andy Granatelli’s STP Corporation. With bad weather when she arrived, Paula was relegated to sitting in a Wendover coffee shop for a whole week and telling and listening to race stories including those of Jim and Marion Deist. Her two record-setting runs were her first and second time in the car and the first at Bonneville.
Rudy Ramos' car with possibly Roy Prosser behind wheel during a practice session at Carrell Speedway in 1949. This car graced the cover of Hot Rod in July 1948 minus the front and side bumpers and roll bar. The flattie stuffed in the Deuce chassied ride with a ’27 body started life as a ’46 Merc before the 5/16” bore and 1/8” stroke job, porting and relieving and obtaining Sharp heads and manifold and a Spalding Brothers ignition. Other shoes up to that time included 20-year-old Rudy, Pat Flaherty, Don Freeland, Wally Pancratz (Bob's brother), and a young kid named Troy Ruttman
Just one of the hundreds of cool old ride photos we know nothing about. This one features a ’30-’31 Model A body sitting on a ’32 chassis with a split wishbone along with a Deuce grillshell. Power has been updated with the use of a 24 stud flattie and has a side mount generator and dual intake manifold fitted with 97’s. It also has big and little rims with appropriate tires and a dropped front axle to give the nose a down in the weed look. Let’s hope it’s not too cold outside so the driver doesn’t freeze
