I am a terrible painter. I won't even attempt base/ clear. Acrylic enamel or lacquer only. So my technique is to make sure I've got a lot of paint on it. At least 3, maybe 4 coats. No clear. My gun is programmed for ORANGE PEEL. Generally start with 600 . Then 800, 1000, 1200, 1500. All by hand. Then start buffing with a wool pad and Wizard's Turbo cut. then switch to several grades of foam pads with Wizards finish cut. All the time worried as hell I'm going to burn through and be back at square one. And I do occasionally . My avatar turned out really nice. My biceps grew an inch!
One quick tip: Be very careful with a wool pad. They cut quick!

If getting orange peel, try moving the gun a bit quicker and thin the paint more. Or don't pull the trigger flat out. It will apply more paint too quickly.

Turns out, when you have the right supplies, polishing is sort of fun. I got my order today from “ Auto Body Toolmart”, went over car aft with 1500, then the 3M purple disks, 2000 and buffed with 3M Super Duty compound. It looks awesome, if I do say so myself.
I’ll polish it with foam pads and 3M machine polish after I was the compound splatters off .
I needed something to go well with it after the windshield mess yesterday, this it.
