Currently, in the Seattle area Craig's List, in the auto parts section, is a single seat speedster. It had the front transverse, single spring, but has a similar coil spring aftermarket setup added to it. Not something I'm really into, but fits with this thread. You'll have to look it up, or maybe someone else can link it. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

I was wondering who might have one of these installed in a project car.
I've never seen one in the flesh so to speak...

    An under dash record player.

I've just been told by an old friend that these units had some kind of needle stability system , so they could be used while driving.

You don't see Model T Ford factory battery cable pullers every day. Any time you see a Ford tool with a "Z" in the part number is is a factory service tool.

    Just came across this beauty.

Not sure how it attaches, but I guess our brains trust will know a bit more about it...

How about the spare tire carrier that I'm gonna use on the Cabriolet (avatar)...turned into a locking tool box?

That would make a nice bar. Decanter, gl***ware, bourbon selection, ice, tongs. Very popular car on cruise nights.

Helped a buddy install one of these in his new 60 Chevy. Wouldn't work until we realized we were working with a plastic dash, needed a ground. They had a spring loaded needle arm that was kinda hard on the records. Another buddy added a reverberation device to his 57 Plymouth. Some how used springs to add an artificial level of vibes until he hit a speed bump or a railroad track which caused a loud series of 'Bar-rong, baar-rong, baar-rongg?'

Robert H***ler was part of Marion Motorcars, he later made the shocks you see here. When I googled that tag is reproduced.

Im an Indianapolis auto manufacturer history buff. I worked at GM stamping plant in Indy, the building and site had a buggy manufacturer in it before it became part of GM, dating back to early 1900's or before. Always looking for more info.

Indianapolis was an auto manuf hub back then.

I suppose if you were rear ended it might be self incriminating. Personally I'd blame it on the HAMB and ask Ryan for bail money. I'm pretty sure that is part of the Alliance privileges.

I guess this split front axle idea qualifies to be posted on here.
Not sure that it ever gained much popularity. 178372492_10223161137649542_9013791719251701457_n.jpg Ballamy_swing_axle_front_suspension_conversion_(Autocar_Handbook,_13th_ed,_1935).jpg Ballamy_swing_axle_front_suspension_conversion_(Autocar_Handbook,_13th_ed,_1935).jpg

Still scratching my head over this rearend setup.
It looks to be a good match with my earlier frontend post #47.
How the hell would you mount it?
    Think bagpipes would be easier!!!

Strangest one I ever saw. Looks like a DeDion except for the fact that the diff is solidly attached to one axle and pivots with it. Guessing it came from over the seas. I'm not an expert on suspension tech but this looks kina floppy. If you're planning any burnouts I'd carry a broom in the trunk to sweep up the pieces of that tiny little center section when it turns into a grenade. Might want to wear a flak jacket too.

Swing axles almost never work well on performance cars. Wonder if it is missing some parts? I'd love to find out what vehicle it was liberated from.

    I'm guessing European.
Never seen a Corvair rearend out, but doubt it is American...

That's an early '60s Mercedes axle. Judging by the width, probably a 230SL.

Nice to know what it is out of.
Still wonder how in the hell you could mount it?
I guess they saved on one coil spring.
    Probably designed by an accountant...

  28. Good catch...FINALLY!!! Wow, @VANDENPLAS you're slipping!

The horizontal spring is there to compensate for the issues with swing axles. The suspension coils fit on the trailing arms. If I'm not mistaken, the center section pivots on an arm that mounts behind the compensator spring. I doubt this design saved any money, but I'm baffled why they didn't go with full IRS.

I just saw this For Sale and while we see many homemade sheet metal folders, this particular one caught my attention as it is fabricated using railway track.
Two things that I can say about it, it must be heavy and probably quite strong.
I felt this one deserved a mention and may inspire others to think outside the box more often...
