My wife just put me into panic mode. She was reading an article in Hot Rod about the 55 Customline they built for the road tour. It talked about having to fabricate a new transmission tunnel to accommodate the 4R70W.

Someone please tell me that it will fit without doing this? I have alread laid the Dynamat and jute. It's all removable, but it would cause an enormous amount of work.

I have no real world knowledge of this but can tell you that the car you are speaking of has a Roadster Shop frame under it with a Gen II Coyote engine. I'm sure they moved the engine around in order to get it to fit which would have facilitated the transmission tunnel work.

That's what I am hoping. They talked about it being super low.

We do know that the AOD will clear without alteration (have one in my '54) this has a chart so you can compare the measurements http://non-stoptransmission.com/en/info-ford.php

Looks like it is close to the same size. Crossing my fingers. I just ***umed it would fit.

I used a B&M Quick Silver shifter it mounts on top of the hump it was close quarters snugging down the mounting bolts you need someone underneath and someone up top. I would not use a shifter that mounts on the transmission. $_1.jpg

I was planning on using a column shift with a cable. That is, if it will fit.

I have a 460/AOD in mine and it fits. There is slight contact in one area but I raised the rear of the transmission when I set up my pinion angle. In stock form they tend to sit lower in the rear leaving lots of room.

All those Roadster Shop / Art Morrison type ch***is' are based on Chevy designed rear sump ch***is. Fords have their engine placed ahead in the engine bay compared to the equivalent Chevy ch***is so they always require cutting the firewall and pushing the engine back. This in turn requires tunnel work as well.

Currently working on a 56 wagon with y block 4r70w, but have yet to install body. I did search this out a while back, and everything I found said it should go without mods but was tight. Have'nt found an actual instance or absloute positve. I believe an AOD goes, and most opinions I found seemed based on that. I welded in new pans and coated the floor in Lizardskin, so if I have to cut the tunnel I plan to flange it for removal if needed. But yeah, a lot of work. Hoping for the best, also.

I have a 4r70 in my 56 behind a 351w. I absolutely love it. I think I had to do some very very minimal grinding on a tab or ear but nothing major.

I had no issues with the tunnel. I am running a B&M quick silver cable shifter.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for that info, good to know I don't have to greatly modify the floor.
