I bought a nice Schiefer aluminum flywheel. I thought it was a Chevy. Ain't so. I need help to ID this thing before I dispose of it. Crankshaft bolt pattern is 6 bolts on a 3.25" bolt circle. Center hole is 2.080". 168 teeth on ring gear. Bronze clutch disc contact surface is 10 1/8" dia., so I guess that means it takes a 10" clutch disc. Overall wheel diameter, less ring gear, is 13 7/16". In cluding ring gear it's about 14 3/16" dia. HELP!!!
Most of them have the part number stamped under one of the SCHIEFER embosed names on the back. I have a Pontiac one #611
some of the chevy 292 engines used a 3 dowel flywheel similar to the 235,but different. maybe that's what it is? diameter and tooth count matches. bolt holes would be 1/2" instead of 7/16" that other chevys use.
go here and scroll down to V2018 and see if that's it different clutch size, which is probably to be expected on a performace flywheel replacing a truck flywheel
There is NO part# on the flywheel. Only a PAT #, and we know that won't do us any good. Thanks for the offer to help.
This makes sense. I'll check the crank flange on a Chevy 230-292 six. Now that I think about it. I asked the seller if it was a Chevy. He said yes, but I never asked specifically if it was a V8. That web site catalog has some great reference information. I can get close to the flywheel application using the ring gear dimensions. Thanks for the help.
Well, it wouldn't fit on a 327 V8 Chevy crank flange. But, as Squirrel mentioned, it might be an inline 6 Chevy flywheel.
the 292 was the only one of the late model 6s that used the 3 dowel setup. not the 230/250. and from that list I linked to, it's 67-up that use them. I wasn't sure about the year break, but that make sense. I did mess with a couple 292s several years ago, one a 66, one a 68, one of them was normal Chevy and the other had 3 dowels, now that I think of it the 68 was the three dowel one.
Squirrel, Great tech info. Appreciate the help x 2 !!!!!! But ..... will it work on the earlier crank and ya' just use one of the 3 dowel holes? Or am I out to lunch with that thinking?
as I said the bolt holes are 1/2" instead of 7/16" that all the other chevy cranks used, so I would not try it. sell it as a 67-up 292 flywheel....
i have 4 schiefer fly wheels i am trying to id . 30-30067, 30-30064 ,30-30075 ,30-40064 wiuld very much like to know what they fit if any one can do this. thanks .mike hilton
I have a chance to buy a couple of NOS Schiefer Flywheels in the original boxes but the description is partially obscured by boxing tape. They show to be for 54-57 Ford. One has Model # F454. Other has Model #4454. Is one for F-100 and the other P***enger? See attached pics. Thanks for any help!
If you look carefully at the 3 dowel holes they are not equidistant to the mounting holes. My GMC Schiefer has been drilled for three 3/8” dowels. The GMC also only fits one way. The 6 holes are not equidistant.
What does the back of the flywheel look like? Is it the same all over, or is there an area that has extra weight for a "Detroit balance" ? 55-63 6yl 168 teeth 14.096 gear OD Zero Balance 55-76 V8 168 teeth 14.096 Zero except 400 & 454 70-76 V8 168 14.096 Detroit 400 & 454 From a chart I have, I don't see anything else with 168 teeth
Here's pics of both sides of the #F454. I verified the application of #4454 as 54-57 Ford-Merc 292, 312 in an old catalog and bought it. The F454 may be the same but I can't find that Model # in any catalog I've seen.
