That looks great. I'm curious what you used to retain the hood onto the body?

 

The art of brush painting with enamel is having a really good quality natural bristle brush and knowing how to use it.
The trick to getting a nice brush job is to learn how to "tip it off" as they say in the trade. I've brush painted several cars and gotten very good results with no other work. But then I'm not picky. In the mid '60s my buddy and I got kicked out of Washington Park in Denver for painting my '46 Buick in the park. A 3.00 gallon of surplus Air Force Blue paint and a couple of cheap brushes did the trick. A case of beer helped, too.

 

Ha, many years ago when I was young and my Corvette was black primer..

Friday night, my buddy and I were getting ready to cruise for chicks in the Vette. I bought two rattle cans of black primer to freshen it up. So right around dusk we pulled in behind a bakery on the main drag, he started down one side and I went down the other. There were some houses on the hill behind the bakery, I guess that's what happened, because halfway through the cops showed up rather excitedly. Fortunately my paperwork was in order and we were allowed to finish up and move on.

Blues4U - The hood is kept on by a center pin that I welded on the hood which inserts where the normal A hinge would go on the cowl. I then used some standard hood hold downs on the two sides of the radiator. Seems to work ok so far. Here's a pic.

 

Spay bombed the roof of my Rambler a couple weeks ago, if that counts?

Older Waco Texas rodders will tell About Laddie Segrest painting his 32 Coupe with Gibsons true black spray cans. He used several cases of paint and color sanded between coats just as you would a high end spray job.

If a guy is good with International farm tractor red the International Harvestor brand spray bomb paint is some seriously good paint. I painted the front of a tractor with it and the farm workers on the dairy washed it just about every day with a pressure washer and they didn't damage the paint work.

My 48 had green paint over brushed on primer when I bought it in 1973. The car wash spray wand took a lot of the green paint off but didn't touch the brushed on primer and I block sanded a lot of that smooth and then primered over it again.

Boat paint is pretty spendy but a lot of high end boats are painted by what is called rolling and tipping. Roll and area on with a roller and follow with a tipping brush to flow it out. That is on multi million dollar boats.

I painted all of these machines in my backyard with Rustoleum rattle cans.

 

Ah, clever! Thanks for the info. One of these days I'm going to add a hood like that. BTW, that paint is just gorgeous, that came out really well.

 

I've used a lot of it over the years, I probably still have a few cans in the paint cupboard. They have a few other colors besides red, but not much. I used a lot of the flat black and the gloss black over the years. Like you said, good stuff.

 

You might want to Google: "50 dollar rustoleum paint job" Many of the articles describe using a roller, some of them look pretty good (in the pictures at least).

My car is brush painted. As I do the metal repairs I sand an area, fix it then brush it again. It'll get sanded back to metal again for a proper paint job eventually.

 

I used this technique to paint the hull on my vintage Chris Craft Constellation when I owned it.....painted all 50 foot of her every season. I got so good at the technique that people thought it was a high-dollar spray job. Sanding prep work was key along with proper outdoor air temperatures and humidity levels and properly thinned epoxy paints. I've never thought of applying this technique to a hot rod.....until now!

 

I'm going to brush/roller paint my truck in the driveway, but I live in a tightly-packed suburbia, so overspray on the neighbors cars would be a problem. I tried to get Tekaloid coach paint from the UK, but nobody would ship it to the U.S., so I settled on doing it with marine paint (EZ Poxy, which is not epoxy at all).

I'm almost ready to paint the bumpers (The first parts to get a finish coat), and will post pics soon.

this is rolled-on Rustoleum. Been on there over ten years.

 

I’m at it again! Rustoleum oil based. Unfortunately I started with a Home Depot 4” roller, the lint started to pull off into the paint, swapped out for a Purdy 4”. It’s a 50 footer! But considering how rough the roof was anyway, it’s not bad.

 

The Chevy was painted with Rustoleum through a gun 11 years ago. Still ok but I think it's time to do it over.
The roadster is brushed on with tractor paint. Two coats with a good brush 24 hours apart. Had a couple of runs but they sanded out then re-brush.

I bought my two sons a OT Pinto to run around in during high school. One weekend - it was prom weekend and one son did not go - we masked and spray canned flames and graphics over the entire body with two colors of spray cans.

It was voted Best Student Car and featured in the yearbook two years in a row.

Thanks, it's a lot of labor doing it that way but sweat equity is part of the game

 

We did the stock cars with Rustoleum quarts and a disposable 3" roller that came with a chintzy roller tray. Of course thin it with a splash of lacquer thinner.

Damn... the cars looked mint from the stands. Touch up was done with spray bombs. Before the feature, we would take anything, AFT, WD40 on a rag and wipe the car down.

 

Not a car but we make mahogany boats and brush on the varnish. We dry sand flat every 3 coats and do about 12 coats total . The micro finish is spot on to our spray booth urethane . So why not a car with a similar viscosity..
