I don't get that. She has every right to trim any verge encroaching on her property, what was she *****ing about?

I envy that you have never met a miserable ****.

That may or may not be true, laws vary by state, and that's not such a black & white picture. Nevertheless, what is certain regardless of state is that if you trim any part of your neighbors trees or plants, you are responsible for any damage that occurs to the tree/plant as a result of your actions. If the tree sustains damage, rotting, fungus, etc at the places you cut, that's on you, and you may be liable to pay for a new tree and the labor to have the old one removed and the new one planted. If the tree becomes sick and starts dropping branches that cause property damage, or personal injury, that's on you too. It's not a trivial matter. It's probably best to use a licensed and bonded arborist if you're going to do that, let them bear the burden of responsibility. Ultimately it's your responsibility. Maybe check with your homeowners insurance for coverage.

This HOA stuff is really weird. I don't know if they exist in Canada, probably do, but I'm curious about them. If you own your home or have a mortgage how can anyone other than official govt agencies have the right to tell you what you can or an not do? Is this like a strata deal? Strange concept unless you are renting.

I would drive a HOA nuts so no way I would live where there is one.

There is no HOA where I live. My place is zoned business (B-3 pretty much everything short of manufacturing). The rules covering business property have changed in recent yours, but I've been in this location for 20 years and was in business for over 25 years, all the changes have occurred after I moved here.
About every 3-4 years we get a "new" person in charge of the nuisance department and that new person always stops by to visit me. I always start out polite, but if they become ***es, I will stand my ground. They all start out telling me my place is not zoned business and I have to get rid of customers cars sitting on my property. I always state the facts and advise them to go check. About 1/2 of them over the years come back and apologized, but the other 1/2, I never see again. The newest guy thought he could push me, and demanded to see my business license (something that came about after my business was established). After I told him I have been in business for over 25 years, the last 20 in this location, he backed down pretty fast. A couple days later he came back and apologized.

We had a new lady move in across the street from me a few years ago. She made a point of telling my that she was going to get rid of my business in her neighborhood (she was renting). I told her good luck, my place was zoned B3. She looked at me funny when I told her that meant I could put up 4 of those really bright parking lot light posts with 4 lights each on them to shine in her bedroom window all night long if she wanted to pursue the matter. She moved out about a year later. Good riddance. I respect my neighbors. I don't do anything outside after dark, and I keep the noise to a minimum. I keep my place up, and help out the neighbors when ever I can.
I doubt I'd do well in an area with a HOA. Gene

They are like little sub-jurisdictions inside of cities, with their own "codes and covenants". Each one is different, though I'm sure there is a standard "boiler plate" type of agreement, with many different versions. Some regulate such things as the color you can paint your home, whether you can fly a flag, if anything can be visible from the front, the type of bushes you can have, even if you have to keep your garage door closed, and on & on. People with power trips like to get on the board, so they can tell everyone else how to live.

HOAs are in place when you buy the house, and you can read all the regulations before you sign the papers. If they want to add more regulations later, it requires a vote, which you now can take part in. Hopefully you can influence the vote.

I think the officers of HOA's must have been hall monitors in junior high school.

THe truck owner says his paint has natural deterioration from age. No way, it is obvious that is was sanded off in patches.
