the safari is a stock 283,so i think if i run 2 inch pipes all the way out behind the rear tires[bellflowers to be added in time]..it should sound just right, there is so many bends and loops to run pipe along an X frame that it'll baffle itself!!.plus im gonna install a gear drive along the way too!!i figure its better than listening to the radio..
[ QUOTE ] my buddy runs straight pipes back to Bellflower tips on his 61 lesabre with a 401. sounds cool at idle, sounds crazy when hammered. [/ QUOTE ] I run the same set up in my 352FE Galaxie..Sounds real good, but also wondered if I was to cause any harm. How about running my Dumps open once in awhile will that harm the valves??
Craig, You'll have no issues with warped exhaust valves. As with any "free-flowing" exhaust system, you may need to slightly richin the primary side of the carb to correct the air-fuel ratio, which will increase overall performance. Glenn
I'd run the pipes as long as I could make 'em. The cold air getting against a hot valve (after you shut down) is actually your worst enimy. Long pipes should cure that. Also with the longer pipe it won't be as harsh. and if you get them behind the cabin it won't be as bad when your pipes are in resonance. I'll never get to old to enjoy the sound if a good set of str8 pipes.
On my cad 429 I run 2" pipe out of the stock manifolds for about 3 feet, then, what is it, 1 1.2 or 1/34 to the r axle, where it dumps at a 45 degree... Not too loud at all, except when starting up and stuff... I ususally try to glide or idle past cops just to be safe!
I ran straights on my V-10 Ram for a while with no cats. It sounded great but the resonance in the cab was too bad for my wife to handle so I had to close them back up.
When I get around to redoing the exhaust on the merc , I am getting rid of my steelpacks and running the pipes all the way out to the back . It wa too damn loud with the tips coming out in front of the back tire , but at the bumper nothing sounds as cool .
burndup do you think you could post a photo of your exhaust? I have been trying to figure out what to do on my 59 Caddy and that sounds like a better idea than the coffee can and steel wool I was going to go with.
How far back does an exhaust system have to run to be considered legal? Is it OK to dump at the rear axle or turn out in front of the rear wheel wells? Thx, Ed
If it is right under the car before the rear axle... its kind of a no-no because of carbon monoxide poisoning. It creeps up on ya...
Can't post a pic... but it does end fore of the axle... I just keep the windows open! Doesn't sound super pretty, but cool enough, and unlike anything else out there.
sweet guys im booked for the 21st ...can't wait,,so today my paint rep' gave me 2,10 foot lengths of 2 1/2 stainless exaust pipe that he was going to use on his truck...i was wonderin' the value[$$$}of it??just in case i dont wanna use it and want to trade the muffler dude for smaller pipe!!!!
