Thought the '50s Olds oil canister collectors were pretty nifty too,
Those were on the 671 blown '57 Olds in the '30 coupe I built here a few years ago

Thanks man, but I'm trying for a 1960ish show car look with this build,
Those look a few years earlier to me,
and I still have that car,
can't have both cars in the garage with the same headers.. ya know? ;)

For the sixties show car look I think you’re on the right track with what you tacked together. They need to all be the same length, angle and evenly spaced and I would add nicely detailed 2 bolt or 3 bolt caps to the end of each one.
You could drop them down, add a bend to parallel them with the ground or with the ch***is. Make them all the same overall length so the ends come out staggered. Keep them sorta close to each other though so they look cohesive and not gangly like Chan’s.

Back in the sixties, the local muffler/ hot rod guru made headers with a collector that ran all the pipes in a row. Definitely a local thing, but definitely sixties.

redid the front and back (cylinders 1 and 7) primaries
center line radius' were 3", 4" and 5" front to back
    now all 4"
added 12" to the straight leg on each for equal length,
I like the Catallo Coupe headers but the super short rear as compared to the extra long front primaries make me think of unequal burn and tough tuning..

    welded them all up
    and dressed all the welds

using all 4" centerline radius bends made me short a couple
so I had to order more to do the other side..
    anyway, here's some pix,

Rolled the car outside to turn it around to make it easier to work on the p***enger side.

I do always try to make it look easy,
you know, so anybody will think they can do it too.

That's better. Can't wait to see how you finish it all up.
When doing outside headers, every time I turn a car around to do the other side it takes me a little time to re-orient my head. I always level the car, make me a floor standing fixture, take lots of measurements and look from every angle before I commit to too much welding. Lol

Paul....fantastic lesson learned from those photos! I've lucked out on exhaust work and a couple headers I've built in the past, but using what I'll call your radius fixture is genius! Maybe everyone else knows about doing that but me?:(

  19. Fair enough. You're certainly right that they look a few years earlier. I must have missed the intended era of the build for this one.
What you've come up with looks great however! Always impressed with what you pull together, great stuff.

Yeah, it's kind of ambiguous but there are a few clues, the 1962 steering wheel for one.

Looks like it'll be a week before more U bends get here..
may have to work on something else in the meen time.

I had one half a U bend and a couple s**** curved pieces of the 4" cl tube left,
enough to put together two of the p***enger side primaries
    so.. 'did that.
then measured angles and location of driver side pipes,
made a wood jig to mirror them
got the two p***enger side pipes roughly where they belong..
..still should wait on the last pipe before final fit and weld..

I had modified a bracket to mount the generator up top when this engine was to go in an A Coupe.
I wanted to keep it in the engine compartment,
now in the little T it was too much in your face.
so, moved the headlights forward about an 1-1/4"
used the generator bracket from the '27 as a pattern
and relocated the mount holes in the new bracket to bolt the generator back 13/16" to align with the rear pulleys.
All to give a little more clearance between headlight bucket and generator pulley.

    cut, grind, drill and bolt..
    and wrap with shiny.
I made the generator wrap of aluminum for the '27 before I found a chromed generator.

Tacked together primaries for cylinders 2 and 8
Making both sides the same is like hanging paintings on a wall, it is all about what looks right to the eye not necessarily what is plumb and square.
All tubes are the same length, set at close to the same angles and dimensions from body, frame, floor etc.
But with the right side starting further back than the left minor adjustments can make them appear more balanced.

I'm kinda late to the party catching up on the header making; but the change to matching bend radius made all the eye-pleasing difference in the world.

Looks great @Paul...that should keep the pavement clear on both sides of the Hotrod, do the doors open enough to get in?
