So I'm in the process of rebuilding a set of water pumps for my flathead, but I'm unsure of something. The rebuild kits I bought from Dennis Carpenter have an impeller with a groove for an internal clip, but didn't come with one. The pumps I'm rebuilding didn't have the clip or a groove in the impellers. The pumps I pulled off of my motor have the clip. My question is do I reuse the clips or re***emble the pumps without a clip? Sent from my SM-G960U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I've rebuilt about a dozen 40 water pumps and I've never seen that clip in any of the pumps or kits. I've used new kits and old stock rebuild kits. I'd think you would want the pressure to always press against the seal (such as it is - not really a seal) and a clip might restrict that pressure. Maybe the clip is just to keep it all together while being ***embled, but after the pulley is pressed on the group is tight and the clip is not holding the spring any more?
Thank you for the help. I've been trying to figure it out for a few days now. I didn't want to do it wrong and end up having to pull them apart again and start over. I really appreciate it. Sent from my SM-G960U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
PSMITH-40: What year water pump are you rebuilding? All are not the same. Here's a good article. https://myplace.frontier.com/~wgmumaw/Water Pump Rebuild/Rebuild 37-48 water pumps.htm For more info. Google "Rebuild Flathead ford water pump" and lots of info appears. https://www.google.com/search?q=reb...7j0i22i30l2.9824j1j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 Post your question on Fordbarn as there is a fellow there who rebuild pumps profesionally. Others also.
I actually had watched Mart's video and that's why I decided to try and rebuild a set. Here's the pumps I'm rebuilding after a little bead blasting and some primer. Sent from my SM-G960U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I am about to attempt the same with my 8BA water pumps... I have the Carpenter rebuild kit. I did watch Mart's video and another one on YouTube. I kinda feel prepared however it seems that I need a press ??
I've done plenty of 59A pump rebuilds with just a large vise and sockets. But a press is much easier. I just have a Horrible Freight 20 ton H press, but it works fine and didn't cost much. I should have bought one years before I did. I've never done a rebuild on an 8BA pump. The shaft/bearing ***embly might be even touchier than the 59A bushing, so a press might be required.
Peruse this helpful info. about water pump rebuilding. Another possibility: I had my 8RT water pumps rebuilt by "SKIP" Haney on Fordbarn for about $200. This includes new and improved spiral bladed impellors for improved flow and gaskets. Pictures show rebuilt pumps. It's worth the money. Skip is in Florida and has been rebuilding pumps for years. https://www.google.com/search?q=reb...33i22i29i30.6200j1j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
