I have a low-end Jegs/Intelletronix GPS unit that would drop out on bridges and tunnels. It also was worthless below 20 MPH (like I said "low-end"). I removed the satellite receiver and fed the speedometer with a signal from magnets on the drive shaft. I used a Rostra cruise control magnetic pickup coil - the same signal is used by my Rostra universal cruise control.

Not working under 20 would be a big issue, given that much of my range is limited to 25.

To be fair, I only look at the speedo when going less than 25 mph in very few, specific situations. It's not needed most of the time.

But I still enjoy watching the speedo needle doing it's job, knowing the archaic technology of springs and magnets and gears that make it work. There's more to it than ones and zeros...some of us can appreciate that. We're not likely to put 5 speed transmissions in our cars, either :)

My cars live in a town where they will give you a ticket for 1-over the limit.

  6. I know this is an old thread, but i had KatoKing do the conversion on my S-10 tail housing and it works great. He also made me a split ring to move the drive gear on the main shaft since the S-10 is in a different location than the Mustang one was.

This is a picture he sent me before it was all welded up. you can see the different location of the recluctor sensor Vs the driven gear bullet . He does nice work and I recommend him.
