Lately there seems to be a lot of deletions for some unknown reason. There is nothing telling you who deleted it. This particular post arrived today and it removed something I had posted long ago. The suggestion was that I post it in the Garage Journal........ I was under the impression that discussion of tools related to usefulness for automotive needs IS an acceptable discussion. In reference to this, there was a complete thread a year ago on a fellow scratch building an overhead crane system in his ba*****t. There have also been numerous other threads where people have posted their homemade shop cranes for all to see. I can personally tell you that anyone who has gone to the trouble of building a homemade crane will love using it on their HOT ROD projects. Now, since whoever has deleted this does not provide any recourse to question the wisdom of their actions, I decided to post this thread and see if its just an overzealous moderator or have the acceptance standards changed. I mean we have had threads on actual buildings that members have erected to work on their cars or store them. I have a su****ion as to which moderator may be doing this. My suggestion is that people on this site are usually not youngsters, and the depths they go to when dis***embling vintage vehicles means that anything that can help them complete their dis***embly and rebuild.......is relevant. I don't see how it is in any way harmful to the site, or a tool that isn't useful for vintage automotive fans. Then perhaps the moderator doesn't know that cranes were a tool in virtually every automotive shop long before two post lifts and cherry pickers became common. So I think this shows that cranes can be considered an auto shop tool.
Whether your point is valid or not is irrelevant. Taking up a complaint against a deleted post is a surefire way to get banned. They don't play around here. This should be handled through PM.
You can't PM someone when they don't tell you who did it and give you an opportunity to discuss it. There have been lots of threads about cranes and their usefulness, now months later out of the blue I wasted my time trying to help other builders. Some of us put a lot of effort in our posts, any many Hambers have learned from them. Its a lot different when they delete a 2 minute reply because someone got combative than when they arbitrarily delete something that took some time to compose.
I'd say it's a valid question. If the answer is given here it'll establish a guideline for the future
Vintage photo thread for the above photos is relevant. .. ... but topic itself, is www.garagejournal.com fodder for sure. Cool site. Lotsa' great garage oriented topics. Hell .. I have a garage header/shop rot repair thread rolling myself. Your mileage may vary. Bottoms up !!
I saw the thread again early this morning, what some may have missed is a “new member” who just joined, replied in it about overhead Crane repair, the screen name was similar. I suspect the mod clicked the wrong ****on and instead of deleting that one post, deleted the entire thread. That said, I enjoy all the homemade tool posts, I love to read about the creativity of the HAMBrs, gets the mind working for sure!
I deleted it and I have no problem chiming in and I clicked the right ****ons. Your post was 2 years old - I was notified a Spammer posted on your 2 year old post and I deleted the spam and in your 2 year old post another HAMB member mentioned posting it in the Garage Journal and you acknowledged you did. Trying to keep it to Hot Rods and Custom cars but was reminded that what we once deleted and directed to the Garage Journal is a now a judgement call / now ok. Last thing.... " I don't see how it is in any way harmful to the site, or a tool that isn't useful for vintage automotive fans. Then perhaps the moderator doesn't know that cranes were a tool in virtually every automotive shop long before two post lifts and cherry pickers became common." So were bathrooms, sinks, gunk tanks and cash registers...... Besides cranes - I know that too.
I have no idea who you are or how old you are and what experiences you have had in life. Just before I retired I had the experience of working for a young guy who got the job because he was the bosses son. He had NO EXPERIENCE in the job or the department. A few entry level jobs were created (govt contractor) to get him in the door and within 5 years he was a department head.....and didn't know sh**. One bad decision was to throw a bunch of stuff in a 40 foot dumpster before giving me the chance to verify it didn't contain any govt property. After unsucessfully trying to get it dumped in the parking lot, he had to call the govt rep and show him that they couldn't get to some govt stuff in the bottom. When I advised him another time that he was reversing a decision we had fought for previously and that had been blessed by upper management as the correct way to do it...........He looked at me and said, "What we have here is a failure to communicate". I asked him if he had any idea where that saying originated since he apparently heard it somewhere(probably his Dad). He admitted he did not know. I emailed him a utube video of Paul Newman laying on the ground and Strother Martin uttering the famous saying and suggested he rent the movie so he might understand the context next time he used it. All of that being said, I have no idea whether you were actually aware that cranes were a mainstay in shops and garages in "the day". Just ask some of the young guys at a rod run if they know about anything but cherry pickers and I think you will see that most really don't. I'd like the ones that participate on the Hamb to get some of that insight as part of their learning curve on the Hamb and I try to encourage older Hamb guys too. Its a great tool. Thank you for reconsidering. Obviously I take what I post on the Hamb very seriously and want it to be helpful. I don't want to waste my time trying to put information together only see it disappear later. Tools are as much a part of the hot rodding genre as the cars are..........in my opinion. Oh, and the young boss I worked for.......his Dad was the handshaker and greeter for our site when politicians came calling. He made several bad mistakes and fell out of favor and retired due to pressure. His son left too since he no longer had his Dad covering him and he had stepped on a lot of toes.............
That things which are obvious to people who have grown up relating to particular things are not obvious to those who came afterward. Since I know nothing about you, I can't ***ume that you can relate to the same things I (and many others that comment on my posts)relate to. Additionally there are people who are old like me but never had the "luxury" of hanging around old shops and garages. Lots of new guys trying to wade into Hamb threads that tell you right up front that they don't know anything and would like some help. The recent thread by a fellow....think his name was "cuddlestwo" or something. He had a great experience just having people guide him through replacing a head, and he expressed his appreciation. Nope, I don't ***ume that others have had the great experiences that life has afforded me.
As someone getting ready to put one up in my garage I was not aware of the thread! I'll be reading it. Thanks putting it back up! ( Scored a trolley beam out of Anheuser Busch) [emoji3] Sent from my SM-J7008 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
So........what happened to the ex-boss and his son? Seek other employment?...poverty, life of crime?...appeared in a reality show?...abducted by aliens?.....just curious
