As the ***le says, I've got a question. Looking to dual the exhaust but don't know which mufflers to use. I've got a single Smithy on now, but isn't as loud as I would like. Any other ideas?
Were you planning on using a split exhaust manifold? Landgon's makes some really slick stainless headers. If I was keeping my six, I'd go for those. As far as exhaust noise goes, these flat-sixes are inherently quiet. Hell, I've got an exhaust leak at the header pipe on mine and it's still really quiet. If Smithys don't do it for you, take them off and run a straight pipe and see how you like that. For the duals with Smithys, check out www.50plymouth.com. Pete (BlueSkies) has some video on there with his exhaust setup.
Old Mopar flatties were pretty low volume engines (decibel wise).....I would just run a straight pipe with no muffler, that should sound just right!
Here's what the dual smithy's with a cross-over pipe sound like on my '50 230... http://www.50plymouth.com/12-sou/rev2.mov And a few driving clips here: http://www.dropshots.com/idahoblueskies It's not loud, but then I didn't want it loud... If you do, don't do the balance pipe, and maybe straight pipes no mufflers. Pete
I am running a Dynomax turbo flow on my 230 with dual carbs and single exhaust. It growls pretty good when I jump on it, but provides a nice quiet cruise. Guess I'm not into noise. Pour some gas in your smithy and light it up. Burn out the packing, se ewhat that sounds like. Why yes. officer, I do have a muffler and it is hooked up. Look and see for your self. Do the gas trick with the muffler/s off the car and out of the garage............
Thanks for the info everyone. I'll have to wait until I get to work to check out what it would sound like as I only have dial up at the house. I did take it to a muffler shop today and the old man told me that he couldn't split the exhaust and running without a muffler would be illegal in Texas. Boy, things would be cheap and easy if I would have just bought a chevy.
Driving a Plymouth 6 without dual pipes is not acceptable ... we split '53 Plymouth & '50 Dodge manifolds for friends over the past winter, plus a '54 Chev, & I'm not really old ... it's a nice do it at home project if you can weld cast. You need to hear a '52 Plymouth OD equipped car with 17" Dougl*** steelpacks & Fenton headers to be able to form the right decision.
Thanks for the info guys, where could I find the link to get the split exhaust? I'm growing impatient trying to find someone local to split the original exhaust manifold.
Mike Yoder of Kansas Kustoms did a couple of stock manifold splits for me. His e-mail addy is: Mikey@sssystemsinc.com His welding is very nice, the manifolds look like factory cast items. He can leave the heat riser in place and functional if you are running a stock intake manifold, or he can cut it out completely if you are running an aftermarket intake without the heat riser mount. Also, George Asche is making dual intake and exhaust manifolds from your stock parts, his contact info is on my www.50plymouth.com site under the suppliers page. Here's a pic of Yoder's work without the heat riser. Pete
Check out www.rustyhope.com. I've heard pretty good things about his work and plan on sending my intake and exhaust to be split.
