There's a promoter who's apparently gotten the OK for one drag race at the closed Calverton Executive Airport, formerly the Grumman Aircraft Facility, and hopefully it goes well to conti9nue with more races. Huge for the guys on Long Island, and New York in general. Lots of planning, money, and preparations going on. Project is headed by Pete Scalzo, who apparently has ran race tracks in Florida, and has been trying to get this done for some time. With so many drag strips closing, this is good news. I read this on another site. Anyone have anything more? I am Butch/56sedandelkivery.
Butch I would like to believe it but this story has been going on for over 20 years. It would be great for my friends on the Island but there is just too much against it happening. Pat
Here is the latest on the proposal. https://riverheadnewsreview.timesre...ries-of-14-events-to-be-held-on-epcal-runway/ Pat
I was at that facility quite sometime back in 1990 as a field rep for Boeing engineering out of Seattle. That's going to make one great strip. Congrats out there guy's.
There's another article floating around that says one race is actually in the works, but they still have a lot of work to do to make it happen; permits, concrete jersey barriers, etc, etc, etc. Used to be several drag strips on Long Island, but they all fell to progress. I believe they're also talking about this being an 1/8 mile track, even though those runways are pretty long. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
There is an article in the Long Island Newsday today about the proposed drag strip. The article states that the town has approved a two day event scheduled for June 19th and 20th. Some local residents are not so happy with the town allowing the event to proceed however. One resident is concerned about how "tent's for the event will impact sensitive habitats at EPCAL" (the property) and "whether the town knows how many people will attend the event" and "if the town has a safety plan in case of accidents". The article goes on to state that they will feature 1/8, 1/4 and 1/2 mile races and car displays and exhibitions for drivers.
I also read that there were several proposed dates and that first event was approved. Here's a link to the event page. Apparently, registration for first event is already sold out. Looks like its designed for the tuner crowd. www.scrambul.com/launchcontrol
