Hey everyone! I got a old yankee turn signal switch. There are only 3 places for the wiring. Can I rebuild this one so I can use taillight-stop and turnsignal in the same light? Thanks! /Marcus Skickat från min iPhone med H.A.M.B.
@Marcus E, You can't update the switch, but can make it work if you use relays.... Technical - Turn Signal Wiring How-To Part 2 | The H.A.M.B. (jalopyjournal.com)
Wow!! Thanks for that!! Really nice!! Now I need 4 relays if I got it right, will be tomorrow. It’s night here in Sweden right now.... Skickat från min iPhone med H.A.M.B.
That would be the easiest solution if you don't mind the 'extra' light, although given how European practice is separate turn/brake lights may be less confusing to other drivers. IRRC they also used amber rear turns to tell them apart. The one thing you don't want to do is add another bulb in the same housing because the brake lights will 'wash out' the turns when both are on. My avatar was wired like that when I got it, guys following me told me that my turn signal would 'disappear' when I used the brakes...
Here in Sweden we can nearly do what we want, if the car have the original papers. If we building a new car and the car looks like a old one, we need to have eu marked lights. But they talking about to skip that to. My roadster I’m building now, is inspired by the 40s. So I want my Brake and turn in the same lamp[emoji3] Skickat från min iPhone med H.A.M.B.
I don't think you can get that switch to work with the existing bulbs as it was designed to be used with separate turn lights that were only turn lights. The simple method would be to buy a new very basic auxiliary turn signal switch that is small and rob the switch out of it and put it in your switch housing. That you can probably get though your local auto parts supply store. Just make sure that it is a very simple and basic switch that does have the brake lights running through it. This is the wiring diagram on one that a lot of guys here use as the housing is pretty small and not cluttered.
I too converted an old Lucas turnsignal switch for my Austin gasser, as I thought it looked higher quality than Lucas electrics usually are. And my Austin had no lights at all in the rear since it originally had them on the bumper, and had trafficators at the B pillar. So adding two lights per side wasn't a big deal with my car being far from a stock restoration. I have all 4 lights wired for running lights, but outside as turn signals, and inside pair as stop lights. Worked out great for my car and signal switch.
An extra light on the back would be the simple solution and that could be done with some vintage bike turn signals that were pretty discrete.
Marcus and I exchanged a couple of PMs to clarify a few things, he's got it fixed... His translation program is interesting, 'Yippi' came though as 'Jippi'... LOL
