Just need to vent. Bought new bed sills for a 29 pickup last year, never opened the box till last weekend.the two horizontal holes are drilled in the wrong place. They won’t do anything for me! Also said getting wood is difficult to get so they are going up 3 times in price when they do get some.the holes are so close it will be a slot. Do you think glue in a dowel and drill again would be okay?
Dowels okay but use same kind of wood as boards, watch and let’s dry for a few days so the drill won’t wander in if too close to original holes. Maybe even epoxy wood filler that will take a stain if you want above driver quality
For the best result, use a piece of the same species of wood to create the dowel. Glue it in and drill the new hole with an auger bit, not a twist drill- it will run a lot straighter.
There are two ways that I like to do for wood. PC7 wood epoxy is a great product. Second option is pack it with cat hair body filler. Either way works. An old carpenter showed me that using ordinary body putty to touch up wood dents and marks is a fast simple repair for wood to be painted. Drill another block as a drill guide and clamp the guide where you want the hole as that will stop the bit from wandering.
Agree with others here. And a reminder for all of us, open the boxes and inspect stuff when you get it!
Ditto on plugging holes with dowels and re-drill; replaced the wood on a 1919 centerdoor Model T, the car didn't have any provision for door adjustment so had to plug and re-drill the door hinge holes. I drilled the holes slightly undersize using standard drill bits, sanded the dowel on a taper to make a force-fit, used Elmer's carpenter glue. Best of luck with your project.
