Spellcheck doesn't work if you learned to spell in Texas. The english language uses fewer vowels and sometimes makes vital consonants silent.

 

Years ago I saw a t.v. interview with an old fellow from Texas who married a pretty and much younger Russian lady who didn't speak English. When asked why he said he was married 42 years to a Texas lady and never understood a dam thing she said.

Sort of not germaine to this thread, but I'm sitting in a room at the Boots Court in Carthage, Missouri. A 1939 art deco motel on Rt. 66. If I ever need a room in this neck of the woods again I'll for sure stay here.

No... unfortunately we never stayed in any of the cool mom and pop places along the route. That was my wife’s one stipulation... she wanted to stay somewhere nice with a pool each night. With the kids sitting for hours in the car, we would have them work off the energy in the pool each night. It actually worked really well.

 

Very smart on your part (& the wife's). In keeping with the 1939 essence of this motel there are no televisions in any room. The furniture is all antique, as well as the original hardwood floors and original black and white ceramic tiles in the bathrooms/showers. There is, however, an antique (very, very, very old) radio in each room. Your children probably would not have liked it very much.

 

That is what was so great about the El Vado motel in Albuquerque. Old style remodeled to modern comfort. Some of the original car ports were incorporated into the rooms and some to outside space. Some front units are now small public food venues pizza, chicken, coffee, on site tap house. Fill the growler from your room and take it back. .... They are redoing the near by Monterey Motel to similar standards. Not the cheapest but for us worth it. Nice pool, very clean, and friendly. I'll plan our next trip to stay there. Tell Nicole the nice old Nevada couple sent you. She may remember. Indulged ourselves and spent a night in Santa Fe at the La Fanda, classy! Did some shopping but was able to resist the $6,500 boots and the $2,000 cowboy hat. Hope to stay in Williams next time too.

 

Went to the La Fonda in Santa Fe about 10 -12 years ago. Walked in to the counter and asked how much for one night for two people. The fella said $225 (or thereabouts) and I was turning around to walk out when I heard sweetie say "ok, we'll take it." Pretty spendy but have great memories that I wouldn't have had otherwise. I'm going to quit hijacking Driveway builders's thread and start a new one about motels on Rt. 66. Hope the mods don't delete it.

 

Congratulations on your journey. My wife and I did the trip a few years back in a '33 3/w coupe. I am currently building a '29 roadster on deuce rails to do it again. The one thing I would recommend to anyone venturing out on 66 is get a set of the "Here it is" maps and a hi-liter. The maps will keep you on 66 the hi-liter will save your marriage. My wife was the navigator and after several u-turns we figured out if you hi-lite each step you won't lose track of where you are. Our trip lasted seven weeks and 9600 miles. What a blast!

Good idea. I just get carried away with my trips on this road, at least the Texas to California part of it. Several other routes too. No disrespect to Driveway Builder and his family adventure done in style.

 

This is why I converted to a Mopar guy. You can have your cake and eat it too. It's just not cheap. Every Mopar that gets modified by me, stays reliable. I have a sick need for speed! LOL

One other thing I forgot to mention earlier. My wife wrote a daily blog of our goings on to send to family and friends every evening along with the days pictures. After we returned we had it made into a book so one day we can relive our trip. This is something she has continued to do on all of our trips since. Just something you may want to try on the next adventure.

So, we went for it again. This time we headed out for the Niagara Falls. The old girl made it again.

 

The falls were awesome! Even the kids were amazed. I was worried because they kept asking “what else is there other than a water fall?” But they loved it.

 

One of my favorite pics from the trip... my son enjoying the wind in his hair on the open road. No trip will ever beat the Route 66 trip, but we’re going to try. We are planning on a week long trip this summer going down south to visit family. We plan to run this wagon to the wheels fall off.

 

So cool! Before their memory was, "Once we took a trip in ............". Now it is, " We used to always take trips......" I kids' minds two + trips = We ALWAYS used to...

 

Superb! A second (and more) trip proves how much you enjoy the car, not just a one time fling.

This is what its all about!!! We do these day trips all the time..

I had a 65 Rambler wagon. It had a 327 Holley carb and dual exhaust. It was all Rambler too! The automatic trans had a weird way of manually shifting. You start out in L and when you want to shift into second and not go into third, you shifted into D and then right back into L and it would hit second much like a manually shifted Turbo 400..

Judging for the amount of children you have, I'm guessing you figured out how to lower the backs of the front seats and make it into a bed. Sure the GTOs were cool, but at the drive in, when we parked and I folded the seats into a bed they were all jealous. Or at least the ones with girls were LOL>>.

 

Your children are so so so so lucky. Good on you.

 

WOW this sure brings back GOOD MEMORIES. Our family did the same thing about 61 years ago when I was about 12 and I STILL remember that trip. Good on you pops I'm sure the kids will remember this trip for a long time.

At it again... doing another road trip in the old girl. This time heading from Pa to Tennessee. Going to climb the Smoky Mountains for the hell of it. Plus stop and visit family in Nashville. The wifey has a bunch of other stops planned, but as usual the wagon will be the wild card. She’s been running good so this time I really didn’t go over her that much. Getting cocky I guess.

 

Not in TN you won't......Maybe the Smokey Mountains...
