Technical Converting engine mounts from small block Chev to other

    Just curious if anyone has swapped in a big block Chrysler, small block Ford, or flathead Ford where a small block Chevy had once resided in say something riding on 32 rails or a Model A? Mainly interested in years 1930 to 34.

    It’s most likely easier to make/ use new mounts than modify the existing mounts.

    how do to it, would depend on what type mounts it has in the car now. There is more than one way to mount an SBC.

    If the Chevy is mounted with biscuit mounts on stubs of the rails you might create some mounts that use the same stubs for some engines. If the Chevy uses a universal crossmember and Chevy mounts all bets are off.
     
  5. @D-Russ had a SBC in Miss Vicky before the Chrysler Hemi. He kept the T-5. His build thread is pretty complete & probably has before & after pictures.

    Back in the day Hurst had a set formula for front engine mounts. All of the mounts for any given engine were designed to bolt right into a '41-'48 Ford or Merc, using the stock rubber biskets. They also sold frame adapters (Model "A"-'34, '35-'40, '49-'53 Fords and a few others) that made those frames look like the standard '41-'48 Ford. That way, they only had to produce one set of engine mounts for each series of engine. I have seen facsimiles of the early hemi mounts (and a few others) on eBay of late. To make a long story short, if you have one late model OHV engine in an early Ford Chassis, all you need to make another make fit is the proper engine mounts. I believe that this had become almost an industry wide formula and eliminated a lot of confusion.

    For example, the "T" Tub I am intending to build, has the front mounts set to the standard Ford configuration. Although I have an 8BA with truck pumps that I am planning on using, I have acquired Hurst style mounts (and adapter plates) for an early hemi, an Olds Rocket, and even an SBC (only because they were dirt cheap) which will allow me to just bolt any of these engines into the car.

    I did it , just as the Squirrel , answered all depends on the type of mounts you have . I purchased my car 29 years ago , 3 months after the deal was sealed , I was told “ you have stage 4 cancer and a 20% rate to survive 5 years . I was determined to ride in my car before I died . I had a 70 LT1 sitting in pieces . I build it and a 400 turbo . Installed it into my fresh finished chassis , sat the body on a d took a ride . A year of chemo , radiation , 3 surgeries , the Chevy was out . Sold it to my drag racing Buddy . Installed a 302 Ford and trans to the very same biscuit style mounts , same radiator and trans mount also .

    I have seen several 32's that use modified (notched for clearance) stock 32 mounts to mount a SBC to a 32 cross member, so I guess you could use the same mounts to go back to a 32 style Flathead .
