1958 Hello, Did you ever see a car/station wagon before the factory sent them to the dealers in September or October on new car preview days? These days, design studios are located all over the USA, so the sightings could happen in your neighborhoods. We all knew that the local dealers would be stocked with their latest models by September, so we usually anticipated their arrivals. One year, there was a big surprise for us. Here is one of the last moments on the so called, “Last family road trip vacation” in 1958. I was walking back from the lodge/general store in the Mammoth Lakes Campgrounds after buying some new film. It was late summer and a newish Ford Station Wagon of some kind was sitting in the empty parking lot. I had never seen one like it before, with these huge round taillights. At first, I thought it was a custom car out for a family cruise to the Mammoth Mountain Lakes. 1958 the last family road trip vacation Mammoth Lakes Campground My brother had filmed me walking back to the cabin. Since the area is full of trout jumping up in most of the surrounding lakes, the film looks as if I was swatting flies. But, I think I spotted my brother hiding in the trees, taking the film. Jnaki 14 year old teenager wearing Levis, Pendleton shirt, Penney’s white T-Shirt, and Clark’s desert boots. So Cal teenage clothing style in 1958-63. Since the new factory cars would always come out to the public in September or October, this was August, so the owner must have been a car dealer/owner or salesman, showcasing a brand new 1959 station wagon. A road trip test with the family in tow for one quick vacation before the massive factory "new car days."
Friend of mine had a '58 in high school that was two tone red and white. He named it Robert Red Ford. What a beautiful car that was!
Well, if my wife driving it, she gets compliments from younger females and all guys. If im driving, i get nothing from younger gals. Some guys may say something nice. If an communist/green party teacher sees it, she asks if its actually legal to drive old barge like that. If swedish tourists sees it, they put emergency flashers on in their car and wave they hands like grazy. This is just my personal experience. Oh and that 58 ragtop is my friends car.birthday present for himself.
More of my '59, born in San Jose, came to me via Denver in 2014. Couple shots of the new Quick Performance posi rear and big sway bar up front.
