I’m looking at a 51 that needs a new flywheel. Only problem is that it’s a 6 cylinder engine. I see new replacements for the 8s but nothing for the 6s. Are they the same or different? Thanks for the help. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
They are different. Not much interchanges between the 6 and the 8, it is a Ford after all. You may can get a 6cyl ring gear and have it pressed on the old flywheel if that's your problem. If it's grinding it may be a bendix problem rather than the flywheel. If it's the clutch surface it may can be surfaced/machined. Likely your best option is to buy a complete, maybe even running flat 6 and use it for parts. These engines are not hard to find in good running condition. Many really good engines are pulled for V8s. In a way that's a shame because the HA was really a good engine.
Greetings F-ONE!!... my uncle worked in the shop at West Penn power in the 50s....said they swapped straight sixes in after taking V8s out ....drivers liked the addition torque the 6 had...
