Edit: Stand down fellas. I'm moving forward with making templates. I've developed a method for deriving the shapes. Watch out for a video down the line. Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. Mart. Hello. Thanks for looking. I have some questions re the gl*** for my 32 Ford Sedan. I have shown some dimensions that will help me get the shape for the front gl***. If you can help that would be most appreciated. I also show the rear window and ask some questions. Any advice that can be offered would be most welcome. Thanks in advance. Mart.
Trace half of the gl*** out on paper, flip the gl*** over and trace it again. Your missing corners will be revealed.
I would create a pattern using cardboard, thin plywood, or plexigl***. See what fits. Run it up using the channel to check height. Remove the rubber bottom bumpers to get it in. I worry you have a 5W gl***. The front edge should continue with no bend. I have never worked on a sedan but have had 5W and 3W’s. I don’t know what I am talking about. Make a pattern. That is what I had to do for my 3W. Ps, Origial gl*** has rounded edges that are painted black.
Thanks fellas I am fully prepared to make a template from some thick hardboard. I just wanted to double check some dimensions, but will pursue a template by trial and error and check against any dimensions that may be offered. The method of getting the back gl*** in and out is still unknown to me. I suppose as soon as I can generate a template, getting that in and out will generate a method. Maybe not the correct method, but a method nonetheless.
I went through hell with the gl*** on my 32 sedan. The vendor claiming to have correct patterns didn’t. First set was totally wrong. Took them back and the second set was equally wrong, and couldn’t be fixed. The lesson learned was: install the vertical felts, and make a pattern from tempered hard board that slides up and down just right without binding. Do both sides, as they differed on mine! What worked perfect on one side seized up on the other and needed to be slightly smaller front to rear. Sanding off the front sloped edge fixed that. New gl*** guy cut to the patterns and they worked perfectly. Can’t explain it. Doors original to the car. Money and time wasted. Improvise and overcome! I used Bob Drake felts and they have a fixed tab on the top end and a riveted on tab on the bottom which hook over the top of the channel and goes into a slot in the bottom of the factory steel channel. I had to move the riveted one as it was too long, and missed the slot. Once I had the correct gl*** from the patterns, I removed the new felts, dropped the gl*** down in between the channels. By moving the gl*** all the way to the rear I could then slide the front felt in place from the top, push the gl*** forward into it and push the rear felt down into its channel and around the gl***. The winder mechanism is left out and the gl*** is slid almost to the bottom and supported by a 2x4. Once the felts are in and the gl*** slides easily in them raise the gl*** and bottom track almost all the way to the top and install the winder. Just leave screws loose to hold it in place. Adjust the winder so the two rollers line up with big holes in the bottom track and snap them in place. If you replace the outside door handles make sure that the shafts are trimmed enough to clear the bottom track or the window won’t go up all the way. You can “adjust” the metal tracks if there is a tight spot with a blunt nose chisel and BFH.
Thanks A. That's something I will make sure I check. Thanks for mentioning it, I might have not done that.
