I think Snyders has leather spring covers...

  2. You beat me to the punch! I purchased a set of the leather covers from Snyder's and installed them on my '34 Coupe's front spring. Great "period" looks and really adds a "cool" factor to the springs (in addition to keeping the springs lubed).

I make leather spring gators, custom made to fit. Priced by the inch. I made a set for Ron Limbricks "Ghost Rider" roadster, as well as several others. Ron's project used quarter ellipticals, and they looked really cool. I make them to lace up, just like a boot, so you can take them off to service the spring as needed. I don't have access to a picture right now, but if anybody wants to see them, you can do a search for "The Ghost Rider project", or PM or email me, and I'll send some pictures.

If you want to go the electrical tape route, I have access to rolls of vintage style cloth electrical tape. Very sticky stuff, and made of cotton cloth, just like the old days. I wouldn't recommend "friction tape". It looks similar, but it has some sticky stuff outside, and am told it draws dirt and dust and looks like crap after a while. That's why it's a poor choice for wiring, turns "dusty" quickly.

    Long live the HAMB!

Pics? cause that sounds interesting, not for me but for intrigue hunger pains.

  7. My spring wrapped and with zerk fittings is out of the frame while wrap up some welding on the chassis. I snap a few pics if it. Its pretty cool and I haven't seen one like it before.

  8. I've been reading about it on the Ford Barn and they use Slip Plate #1 instead of grease. I bought some but have yet to try it.

I happened to be under my 1948 Mercury coupe just now and realized its front spring is wrapped too.

Sorry for the shitty pictures but figured I'd send a couple through. I'm sure someone can post better ones later.

Many years a go round track racers would tape the springs so no one could see their set up. I added balsa wood taped to my mono leafs to look like I had a big spring pack.

I seem to recall reading something like that; something to do with the metallurgy of modern leaf springs making them vulnerable to attack by mineral lubricants. I'm speaking under correction, though.

I once helped disassemble a Model T that had lead strips wrapped around the springs.

o_O What I'd like to know is how do you rap a spring ? And if you sit there rapping on it, how will that possibly help with the ride or performance of the spring ?
Do you think that rapping on a piece of metal with a hammer or a screwdriver handle will somehow add grease between the leaves ? :D:D

Now if you are talking about wrapping the spring, that's a whole different animal. Literally. :D:D:D

Finally found some pics of the Spring Gators I made for The Ghost Rider Project. I wrapped them on a cardboard spring mock-up, just for some clear pictures. These are a bit short, as they were made for quarter ellipticals, but they can be made any length. And, they can be made in just about any color leather. They've got a tongue on them and lace up, just like a boot. Spring Gator-Quarter Elip 1.jpg Spring Gator Quarter Elip 2.jpg

they look pretty nice :) but I also like the look of the Peugeot idea , the leather ones may be more friendly on something that does some miles.

Howdy I also am installing the same 46 spring with zerks and it’s factory rapped into my 32. Has original rear crossmember and has taken hours to grind and make it fit into the crossmember. Looks pretty good and I like the grease fittings and original wrap from the factory. These are deluxe springs.

question for you.? How much better does it ride? I’ve been told it is a huge difference over a 32 spring. Was it worth all the extra work? I have not finished it up yet but getting close. Many old school fellas and hambers have told me it will greatly improve ride quality.

Find a roofer, ask for leftovers of the rubber sheet they put on flat roofs. Great material to have around the shop.

Friction tape is good looking...for awhile. It's sticky on both sides, so be prepared for the springs to look dirty in no time! Since I had an endless supply of friction tape through my work I used it for numerous things, but I found out it looks dirty from attracting dust quickly.

I like the looks of a ford super deluxe wrapped spring but when I disassembled the last spring I used pvc vertical blind material . Cheap and has been working without lube and is quiet . Best of all its real cheap . I cut up the remaining and use it as bondo spreader .
