Technical Hei wiring issue

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Love_The_Lifestyle, Jun 4, 2021.

  1. Got an electrical question.
    55 Oldsmobile 88
Car doesn’t have a solenoid or relay.

    Wires from the ignition
    Sol. Goes to starter
Ign. Splits off. 1 wire goes to hei bat. The other goes to the alternator (plug 1)
    Bat. Goes to the battery.

Wire from battery goes to the alternator lug then jumps to alternator (plug 2)

The car starts with no issues. But it doesn’t die when you kill the key.

Disconnect the plug from the alternator and see if it turns off.

  3. I disconnected the jump wire that goes from the alternator lug to plug2 on the alternator.
The car dies, but the battery doesn’t charge.

Not an Hei issue it is an HEI wiring issue.
The simple solution is to put a diode in the exciter wire so power doesn't feed back to the ignition.
    Something like this. [IMG]

That diode can be had from Massey Ferguson tractor and probably Ford New Holland for a couple of bucks or you can readily find a similar diode. You can order the 1N5408 diode on Amazon and get a batch of them for about 6 bucks.
Or if you have a Radio Shack that still has parts you can find them there. You just solder them in the wire and put a piece of heat shrink tubing over them.

Ignition is backfeeding from the alternator. You need to isolate the alternator hot wire from the ignition wire. Some cars have a diode in the ignition wire to prevent backfeeding like this.

Sounds like you need to add an anti feedback diode connector. antifeedbackdiode.jpg

    That would be really simple.
I did find several offerings for those on Ebay but none from regular parts houses. one example.
