Yeah, I was thinking that leather is too thick and compressible for that use. I think the original was a copper washer, maybe some other metal with a wave or ridge stamped into it.

Well I’ve never even thought to lock wire a differential drain or fill plug and I have the wire and pliers here as well.

Oh, I haven’t lost one yet either.

  4. Well, I got the fluid changed to that beautiful green and great smelling Limited Slip 80/90w. Turns out it tastes a little like wintergreen. I over filled the differential a bit with a fluid syringe. I was promptly rewarded with a face full of the green stuff. Doesn't taste too terrible but it doesn't go away very quickly.

Everything got back together easily. I waited until the fluid just barely dripped out of the weep hole then I replaced the gasket with a bit of silicone around the seal of each plug. No drips so far! PXL_20210526_004245960.jpeg PennGrade1_Limited_Slip_GL-5_Gear_Oil_SAE80W-90_QUART.jpeg

  6. The drain plug is at the bottom of the differential. You can just barely see it. At the upper right is the weep hole. Have a great day!

couple of sayings come to mind .anything that can go wrong will go wrong.and you make your own luck.
a couple of weeks ago i discovered some bolts on my rear suspension had worked themselves loose.they were fitted as per instructions VBandP product.they are all drilled and lockwired now wont happen again.think safety and do your best and you wont go wrong.

Holy **** man...let it go, his drain plug isn’t going to fall out if he doesn’t safety wire it...

Was following guy in Toyota pickup & notice drain plug gone, could see gear spinning. Got him to pull over to tell him. Rare problem should never happen

  13. It's just some paint on the plug. No worries brother. I understand your concern. I've got so many sketchy things on this car. Hopefully one more won't be too bad. Thanks for the heads up and for always being a great help.

By the way, y'all should be happy. You told me last year that I would regret my GL-4 choice. Glad I went ahead and changed to GL-5. That's some good look'n oil. Plus, that's one more step toward the drag strip!

  14. Drag strip,,,,,!
I just hope you get it driving on the street this year .
It’s almost summer and you are just getting it rolled around in your garage.
It should be ready to go after this gear oil change.
Hope to hear and see pics of it soon,,,,,happy cruising !

  15. Absolutely! The drag strip comment was a bit of a joke. Hopefully we will be at the HAMB drags soon!

Here in the next few days we'll be getting back on the road and tuning with the new jets. I really want to get the car to return to idle safely (without sticking or dying) before getting very far from home. That is the last issue! No excuses!

  16. Crazy day!

Today I went for a cruise with my wife. It was her first trip in the coupe. About a mile from the house the car died. I managed to figure out that the power supply to the electric fuel pump had worked loose. I replaced it and we drove to a near by subdivision where I borrowed some electrical tape to secure it.

The car is still dying when you stop. I think it is better after the jet change though. I bet it will get even better when we raise the idle a bit. I'm also getting more used to driving a standard and giving it a bit of throttle to keep it running.

The rear end is still groaning in tight turns. It should have gotten better after the fluid change. I'm also noticing a possible howling noise as well. It may be possible that I just need to drive it
    more.

We had a great drive today. Just a little bit of excitement. The wife was super proud of my ability to quickly fix the car. We made it to our goal: Sonic!
I even managed to dodge 3 deer and 2 chickens that ran in front of us. I'm so thankful for the nice weather and our safe adventure. Have a great holiday weekend!

My go to , to seal those plug threads is a drop of blue lock tight . Threads have to be clean and dry . It will seal them well and prevent vibrating loose . Seems as to what you did sealed them good so far . I don’t know how the gasoline is where you live , but here it junk and will destroy the guts in a vintage pump rather fast . Just be aware this may happen .

  18. Ok. Thanks. In Arkansas we still have "no ethanol" pumps so that's pretty good. I used a bit of sealant on my rear plugs. No leaks so far.

  19. Here's the culprit from last Saturday. I've crimped the connectors and added a bit of electrical tape for security. It seems quite solid now.

Is the post on the pump not threaded ?
If not , you could use a ring connector with one of these

  21. The cap was only a push on fastener. I believe the post is threaded. Maybe I need to change connectors? Hopefully it is fixed for now.

  22. On Tuesday, Rob and I added the correct wiper switch to the header panel. This was extremely hard to find! It came out really nice. The header panel was already marked for its factory location.

We also increased the idle to around 900. It had previously been reduced to 450 after we cleaned up the linkage movement and changed the jets.

Here are pics of the original car and then mine.

  25. Here's my fix. I did exactly as y'all said. Two springs ARE better than one. Safety first. Now I've just got to "age" this spring to match. Thanks again for the great help and advice!

Spray a little cast blast and a quick squirt of gold in a piece of 000 steel wool and rub it across the spring while it is extended. I do the same to brake boosters and calipers. Experiment a little and it will look pretty natural.

  28. What's up everyone. It got very hot here quickly!
Hopefully we get some better cruising weather in a few days. I've got to take the wife out again soon.

I just wanted to say hello! I really miss the HAMB app. Y'all let me know if we get another one.

  29. Tomorrow I'll be headed to Pe*** Jean State Park near Morrilton, Arkansas. They have a wonderful car show and swap meet twice each year.

We have made some great memories there. This is the first car show I remember attending. It was so hot but grampa and I hid in the air conditioned museum. I smile when I remember my grandfather Junior always buying us roasted peanuts. My father was so proud to drive his 1937 Chevrolet hotrod pickup here for the first time.

Soon my car will be here! It just won't be this year. I can barely make it tomorrow after work with no sleep. Hopefully we can make the 161 miles (2.5 hours) through the mountains next year. We had plans to trailer the car there but hay season got in the way.

No worries! I'll try to post a few show pictures soon! Have a great weekend everyone.

  30. Here's my dad with his 1937 Chevy truck. He's had it since I was 6 months old. I rode with him and mom as they first brought it home....
