My buddy has a '59 GMC pickup truck that he is tinkering around with, and it came with a 336ci Pontiac V8 from the factory... he's rebuilding it, but is having trouble locating a set of expansion/freeze plugs. Does anyone know where to find a set, or what other motors' plugs will interchange?

Also... does anyone know what color the engine would have been painted from the factory?

Any help would be greatly appreciated....

Measure the holes, then go to a parts house & buy them ...

  4. Hell, they should be the same plugs as any other Pontiac block, they didn't change them much. A 336 is like a destroked 370, it uses oddball size main bearings if I remember right, but there's not many other peculiarities to them.

You might hop on the email list pontiac-1950s@yahoogroups.com, there's a couple guys there who'd know what color the block was supposed to be.

  5. The 336 did not have a different stroke or odd ball main size. It only differed in the shortbock by having a smaller bore size. Thats it. Otherwise it is a Pontiac.
All GMCs I have seen with Pontiacs were painted red.
Sounds like a neat truck. any pictures?

  6. They used to make rubber ones that had like a washer on both sides and you put them in and tightened a nut and it expanded like those old thermos jug stoppers. Ain't seen 'em in years.

  8. Pontiac main journal sizes changed like 3 times between '55 and '59. 336 was based on the 370, which has smaller journals than the 389. GMC version could easily have gone to the larger size when the car engines went to the 389 and the journal size most use through '77, though.

My 59 had a 347. Looked just like that one. only it was a green color. My dad bought it from the original owner and I bought it from him. Stone stock big window short fleetside.

I thought the 336 was done in 58. I know the 389 was in 59 in the cars.

Maybe I'm way off, I don't remember so good any more......

    Someone straighten me out.

The Pontiac that was in my 56 GMC was a dark green...I don't know if it came that way though.

Get Br*** Freeze Plugs, they last longer. Looking forward to your engine pics.

  13. Does the 336 have the same casting number as a 370?

    Can a 336 be bored out to a 370?

    -thx
