The truck was making such an awful racket I didn't want to run it to try and troubleshoot. As a consequence I went the long way round to isolate and fix the problem. A lesson learnt. Try the simple things first. Mart.
Had the pump been rebuilt when the engine was ***embled or was this a well used pump? If the pump had been rebuilt, I would be concerned about the rapid wear of the bushing.
It sounds like You Forgot to Put Gear Oil in The Transmission.!??? Just my 3.5 cents Live Learn & Die a Fool
I went out to the garage to look at the pump oil feed in my 59 block; you made me curious. It is "splash" off the timing gears and on my block the drivers side pump feed hole in the block is about 3/16 in. while on the p***enger side it is about 3/32 in. There are little "pockets" in the block on the timing gear part that might allow oil to puddle and then drip into the pump feed . These would also be places for sludge to ac***ulate, possibly.
Excellent video presentation of your diagnosis and solution. Thanks very much for sharing your knowledge and problem solving skills.
Thanks for the comments fellas. Fritz: This was a rebuilt pump. I don't know why it failed. Merc: No, plenty of oil in the trans. Joel: That's right, that's how it works. This block was only recently ***embled so the p***ageways had been cleaned out. Mike: As it had no water in I did not want to run it any longer. I did not see any oil come out in the time I had it running. Fordy: Thanks, you're welcome. 24 hr bump. Mart.
